Thinking about an upgrade...

Hello fellow OCUK members!

So for the past month or so I've been thinking about an upgrade of my PC...
Not really a hardcore gamer anymore so I don't need top of the shelf stuff, considering RTX2060.
I'm on 4690k @4.4GHz right now, planning on delidding it just to get a bit of extra OC and lower the temps.
My questions are:
Will the CPU bottleneck RTX2060 even at say 4.6GHz?
I've got a standard 1080p monitor right now.
Is it a good idea to also upgrade my monitor to a 1440p one?
Or maybe just a 144Hz 1080p will be enough?

Current setup:

i5 4690k @4.4GHz
GIGABYTE GTX970 G1 Gaming
16GB RAM @1866Mhz
Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 7
Antec Edge PSU 650W

Will the CPU bottleneck RTX2060 even at say 4.6GHz? - Depends entirely on what your doing, games, resolution, refresh rate etc. Some CPU heavy games may result in the CPU being a boundary, though usually those games are also GPU intensive. Really best way to see is when you actually pair the two and use the system to see where often then not your limit lies in terms of performance. One thing you could do is to check if you have any limits in terms of CPU performance right now with the 970. Can look at CPU and GPU readouts to see the load during your typical gaming session.

Is it a good idea to also upgrade my monitor to a 1440p one? Or maybe just a 144Hz 1080p will be enough? - Depends on what games you play really. If your into more fast twitch games and somewhat more competitive then a 1080p panel with 144hz may be nicer. If your into slower games / single player, then the higher pixel density you will likely get with the 1440p panel will be nicer., but its all largely personal preference. Also note that the 1080p 144hz refresh rate panel will be harder on the CPU then a 1440p 60hz panel. The resolution will largely impact the GPU, while the higher refresh rate will also impact the CPU as it has to prep more frames in a given time.

Right, so I'm on 1080p 60Hz IPS panel right now (iiyama XU2390HS-B1) - love it to bits, suits all my needs, really...
Is it ok if I keep using it with RTX2060? Any advantages or disadvantages?

No, or at least if it somehow happens, then it'll happen on any CPU

144herz is in my oppinion a minor upgrade that you wont get any milage out of with a 2060. I do like 1440p, but only on larger 27 and 34 inch pannels, as it provides higher pixel density.
I would personally save the money in your case and look into a 2070.

CPU is fine. 2060 is a 1070 equivalent, it’s an ok card for 1080p 144hz or 1440p 60hz.

Up to you whether you upgrade the monitor.

Personally, I’d go second hand. You don’t have access to the MM, and I’m not sure what eBay prices are like. It a 1080ti goes for about £500, and provides significantly better than performance than the 2060.

Of course it doesn’t offer the questionable benefits of RayTracing. Up to you if you think you need it.

I had a 4690k with a 970 which I upgraded to a 2060 2 months ago and all was well until my motherboard went pop a week or so ago. I 'only' ran mine at 4.2Ghz though, it did run at 4.4 but the increase wasn't that much and the tradeoff with temps wasn't worth it for me. If you are delidding then of course that a different story.

The 970 > 2060 was definitely an upgrade, but was it worth the 330 quid? It was for me but it's a fair chunk of change but I have a 1440p monitor so it means I could game at 60fps much easier with higher settings, obvious I know! If you plan on staying at 1080p/60 then it's a bit of a pointless step, if you plan on 1440/60 then yes its great, I dunno about 1080/144 though on a 2060. It really depends on what games you are playing I suppose though.

I would take 1440/60 over 1080/144 any day unless of course you are playing competitive CS:GO or something like that :)
