Unlikely claim of M5 ownership triggers inevitable detective hunt.

Just another day in motors.

Not at all. I just want some M5 info, because the M5 is probably my all time favourite car as most of this forum well knows.

FWIW I find it unreasonable to dispute that the perceived quality on a Golf is higher than that of a Focus - it is.

Actually I was anticipating what was to come rather than commenting on your request for pics.

Regarding your second point, you often say 'perceived quality'. Does this mean that you think the reality is different from the perception (in terms of interior build quality)?

Conscript - if he has a short commute, a little cheap hatch makes sense so as not to have to use the M5 for lots of short journies. Also, GTis are always likely to have more rattles due to the harder suspension, but I feel that the MkIV Golf feels more solid in terms of tangible parts like door handles (interior and exterior), console buttons, dash plastic quality, window switches, indicators, etc.

If it was the occasional rattle over a bump, fine. But I mean, it squeaks and rattles constantly. It feels old and tired and on it's last legs. Im not claiming the Focus is carved out of solid granite, it is obvious not, but Im very pleased with the way its held up for a 10 year old car. I'm really hoping that it's just a one off, because my experience is completely contrary to the overwhelming "Focus sucks/MK4 Golf rocks" statements I see all the time on these forums.

Yes. Perceived quality is what sells cars. You get in, you close the door, and it goes thunk. The dash is well screwed together. The plastics are of high quality. It feels like a quality product - you perceive it to be a quality product.

Then the water pump fails, the electric motors for the windows breaks and it turns out that in terms of actual quality that cheap plastic Toyota is better. Yet if you get into the Toyota, the door goes clang, the dash is made from plastic so bad Mr Kipling would reject it and the whole thing feels like flimsey, low quality tosh.

That said, I'd always take perceived quality - you can pay somebody to fix broken stuff but you can't make a car that feels cheap feel expensive.

Lol, throwing abuse when people try to suggest a better alternative......brilliant way to get respect and help around here!

It wont be mint for very long if he's sent his bonnet away for a respray, the paint finish wont match the wings if its not properly blended.

I didn't say it was getting resprayed. I said there were a couple of stone chips getting repaired.

That's why they don't need the whole car.

Why did you decide not to have someone out to fix them and have your car ready to go in hours rather than days?

You appear have to managed to double post over a period of 30 minutes!

You have sent your bonnet away for stone chip REPAIR? Surely after postage both ways its approaching the cost of a proper respray?

Doesnt sound very mint if your are using touch ups on stone chips

The cost of the golf would easily have covered it, never mind the postage.

Who takes the bonnet off a car to get some stone chips fixed, honestly?

Its not like you can use the car with the bonnet and wheels missing, so the additional work of removing said items offers little to no benefit.

I LOVE when somone throws a simple comment into an argument to try and shut someone up, it always ends in the comment throwers downfall.

Why did you do that?
Low miles, mint condition, two female owners, full vw service history etc. All the others i had been looking at for around 2k were atleast double the miles, dodgy service history, been abused by chavs and had stupid things like dustbin exhausts stuck on the back and in general had dings etc on them. I paid a lot but it was by far the best one i had seen.
