Thinking about buying an FTO

That one looks awful! The skirts are rank and no spoiler really doesn't work as a look on the FTO. Exhausts wtf too..

I had one a few months ago ... great car, something a bit different, was quite nippy but just wanted more power, mid range they were excellent due to V6.

I never had the Mivec just a V6 GR but still was 180bhp and i never had a probelm keeping up with the mivic as the car still rev'd real high (or an s2000 or CTR infact). The only problem i had was rust .. even though i kept it at bay it was present, i think if i had kept it any longer i would have seen it come throught the paint work - so beware of rust specially rust on the roof as its only a single skinned roof panel. Also bad idle due to stepper controller -easily corected tho

I sold it because ..... gearbox blew up lol (torque convertor) i was doing 130mph on a track *cough cough* i did look after the gearbox too, checking fluids often but its just antoher thing to worry about tbh

The car was sexy tho and the inside was nice with a nice driving position, had put leather seats in too. The peeling headlights are an easy fix with some fine sand paper so dont let that worry you. I would have liked to drive a manual that would have been awesome!

A large proportion of the cars came with Mitsubishi's INVECS II7 Tiptronic gearbox which was licensed from Porsche. This gearbox has two settings; a normal full automatic mode and a manual Tiptronic mode, achieved by flicking the gearstick sideways in its gate. When in Tiptronic mode, the driver needs only to push the gearstick backwards or forwards and this will change up or down through the gears with only a small delay.

This gearbox received huge amounts of praise when it was released; when driven in 'tip' mode the car actually starts to 'learn'. The INVECS gearbox contains a Neural Network which works in a similar way to a human brain; information on the driver's shift points and driving style is fed into a learning control circuit. This then enables the car to select the optimum gear for the driver when he is using it in fully automatic mode.

You could always buy my FTO Jake :)

Owners on the forums often sell there so you are more likely to get a well looked after one there. Can definitely recommend the Mivec :D and manual although some folk seem to like the tips.

Definitely join the forum though as it is invaluable.

This is mine...but you cannot buy it :p

Had one a few years back. Really enjoyed it. Was a fun yet reliable car. Always walked away giving it a second look as it was nice styling, especially when you put larger alloys on than the standard. One main problem though - it lacks power, 180-200bhp sounds fine but the cars weight makes it a much slower car than it should be. It was never a smooth overtake - you had to rev it a hell of a a lot to get some speed out of it. If only they produced a turbo version!

A colleague of mine bought one back in 2001. Two months after purchase his ate it's tiptronic gearbox. Was an expensive replacement because it's so rare. Tread carefully.

Ignore Zip (Hi, I'm in Adelaide!) because over in the UK they dont tend to be driven by many girls. Although ours was my Mums car..

:p

I dont mind them, id like to see them as RWD though TBH.

And Hi
Hows your trip going?:)
Hoipe you have managed to drive Greenhill road through to stirling then down to macclesfield and into strath.

Bloody awsome drive that:cool:

Not so sure - FWD kinda suits the point and squirt handling. They are lots of fun and very forgiving.

Going great thanks. Got some net time as the GF has gone for a nap. Adelaide is a very nice place - so compact and well planned. And everyone drives a normally aspirated Subaru for some reason

Holdens are, as you said, junk. Hated the Commodore I took to Phillip Island so I've requested that I'm given something else for the drive to Sydney on Monday!

It is well planned:cool:

Subarus do seem to be a big thing to drive down here, shame they do hold price quite well compared to the uk or id have a good one:p

Glad you like adelaide. Hope you get to see the hills aswell, they are really great.

Also glad you now know what ive been saying about commodores all these year:p

Have fun:)

When I was looking at FTOs a few years a go I was told people change them from autos to manuals are they're too expensive to replace when they go.

MW

highly rated fwd handling cars, im sure they were on a par with the integra (dc2??) when they were released for handling (or so the press says).

Thanks everyone that has replied and given me advice. I think if I do go for one, it will be a manual. Also when looking for insurance, I have been quoted silly prices :(

I might look at something a bit cheaper for now :)
