Thinking about getting a 27" 3D monitor for battlefield 3

Do you have an NVIDIA or AMD graphics card as that can have an impact on what monitor you would need to buy. there's plenty of options for the NVIDIA 3D vision system. the Asus VG278HE is popular and a good screen, as is the smaller new 24" VG248QE. BenQ have a new 27" model coming soon too which is the XL2720T which might be interesting, or they have their existing 24" XL2420T as well.

You may also want to consider screens featuring LightBoost system to bring about rgeat improvements in motion blur for 2D gaming. see here:

3D isn't really suitable for FPS games. It's a wasted investment imo. You'll find almost everyone that has tried it having given up on the gimmick soon after. For non-FPS games it can be quite fun tho.

The only 120hz 3D displays to work with AMD were the Samsungs, but they have been discontinued. Your other option is a 60hz passive 3D display.

Anyone know why this is the case? Do AMD cards not handle 3D well or something? It's very frustrating looking at monitors and seeing that they come with 3D and knowing its a feature you will never be able to use.

I've tried the vg278he and although all the reviews are great, I prefer my old "23 lg w2363d.

Don't know whether it is the added size, or the the input lag (was very low though) but I seem to get on better with smaller LG. the mouse just seems to respond better but it is probably just a placebo effect as the input lag was listed as about 4ms. on the Asus. (0 ms. throughput mode on LG)

What you can do with this monitor is force it into light boost mode in 2d which helps with zero motion blur, but brightness colours were a lot darker, I preferred 144hz over it though.

Personally I find 3D + FPS games feels a bit constrained - its difficult (atleast for me) to react to and take in the scene as quickly and as effectively aim/move as fluidly for want of a better way to describe it its like it add an extra step between you and the game everything is a bit more effort and a little more clunky than in 2D. While some single player FPS games are quite an experience in 3D after the first 20-30 minutes or so I've gone back to regular 2D as its just less effort/more convenient.

If you were to play through something like tomb raider or bioshock infinite using a controller then it probably works just as well but for an old school mouse+keyboard FPS gamer like myself its just no fun.

Has anyone tried 3D for fps games, or have any advise for me regarding which monitor is best for a max of £500?

Just be aware that aiming down the sights in FPS games tends to be much harder.

If you focus on the reticule you end up seeing two of the target and vice versa.

Flying is all kinds of good though...
