thinking about getting a Asus RT-AC87U router

Don't think anyone has one as they are pretty new, nobody has clients that will take advantage of it's AC or that it's just overpriced. Best to just look what Kitz, Smallnetbuilder has to say on it.

I have one, very happy with it. I have a HG612 then a AC87U as main router running PPPoE for VDSL and then a secondary N66U providing extended wireless coverage in our summer house. Around 30 devices connected wirelessly and wired.

Pretty much just works, don't touch it much other than to check for updates. Good wireless coverage as well in our 3 floor house.

I replaced my SH2ac with the AC87U a few weeks back. The performance is better, not leagues better but it is better. UI is much better than the SH2 though.

got the AC87U last Thursday. settled it up which was easy. the UI is nice to use. wifi i had some issues at first because on default settings, i could only get 144Mb link speed on 2.4Ghz on one of my laptops which only as 2.4Ghz card. so after i changed the Channel bandwidth to 40 Mhz from 20/40 Mhz and changed the Channel to 5, then i got a link speed of 300Mb. and i get 150Mb real performance, i was hoping for around 200Mb. i tried my Samsung S5 on 2.4Ghz but for some reason that would only give a link speed of 144Mb...

my outdoor IP camera seems to perform better/run smoother, i guess due the better coverage.

the 5Ghz is perfect on default settings. my Samsung S5 got a link speed of 866Mb, which is near enough the same as i got with the SH2ac. i haven't tried my other laptop yet which as a 5Ghz AC card.

the latency is improved also, see below..

SH2ac + AC87U

SH2ac

my WD NAS drive seems to performance slightly better also

i will add more to this once I've tried more things out.
