Im with sky broadband (not fibre) and have the god awful sagem router not the hub, I was going to buy the tp link 8970 router that has gigabit ethernet my current adsl cable has to run up the stairs it is 5m long but is a bit short to where it is located.

quick question will length of adsl cable slow my internet and ping etc and should I use the old (sky router) to run adsl to the router and run the ethernet from that to the new router upstairs as ethernet is not meant to slow down over length?

sorry for the silly questions if they are

Put it like this, I'm currently within arms reach of my router and I've got a 35m Cat6 cable coiled on the floor.

Over those sorts of distances you're talking about it doesn't matter if you run the DSL cable or an ethernet cable, you won't see a difference.

could someone who is with sky tell me how I would set this up please thanks

Down to bottom, accept the disclaimer and then select the bottom Sagem router, then input the MAC address of the router and the default WPA key which both should be on the underside of the router.

This will give you the login details, then when you receive your TP link you just need to set the connection to PPPOA and insert those details, wa-la.

They don't terminate contracts anymore due to third party routers IIRC because of the BE/O2 merger they let them use their current router, but they do say they won't offer customer support if there's a problem and you're not using their kit, which I guess is fair enough
