Any tips?

Will have to be during the School holidays 2014 (August) looking for 14 nights, there will be 2 adults 3 kids one over 16 budget around £6k - going to the cruise show at the NEC tomorrow.

Never been on one so what to look out for/ avoid please

Avoid icebergs and maiden voyages to the US. If you see Bill Zane he's a bad un and if you need to chose between Winslet or Di Caprio go with the Winslet as she is a better swimmer.

Dont go for winslet fool, she is so selfish!! They could have easily fit both on that piece of wood, she decided that her own personal space was more important than life of DiCaprio.

You must be at least 10 years older than me if you're going on a cruise because I've only got that amount before I'm a pensioner and I can go on one.

I've done 2 cruises and enjoyed them both (one Mediterranean and one Norwegian Fjords) They were both through P&O.

As you have kids then I've heard Royal Caribbean are better as they have more stuff for kids on board etc. I've not been on one of their cruises but it's next on my holiday list to try as I've heard nothing but good things about them.

If you can get one that does a round trip from/to Southampton then you haven't got to worry about luggage weights for flights (or the added flight costs) etc which is one less thing to have to think about.

See if you can get free parking at Southampton thrown in and/or onboard spend so any alcoholic drinks can be bought with that instead. Depending on how much spend or how much you drink, could mean you don't really have to spend much more money when on board as food/none alcoholic drinks/entertainment is covered 24/7 within the initial cost.

Don't forget to budget for excursions if you want a guided tour of the places you stop at. This can vary on what your ports of call end up being. Some are the ports for the area you will actually be seeing, so you can get off the ship and do your own thing without paying for an excursion, but some ports of call are not the actual place you're meant to be visiting. For example, if one of your stops is Rome, then the port you actually dock at is Civitavecchia, which means a couple of hour road trip to get to Rome, so without actually booking one of the excursions, you could potentially miss out on seeing Rome.

Just got back, best deal we saw was on MSC cruises leaving July 29th Southampton 10 day cruise around North Eu Portugal, Spain, France, Netherlands Food and limited drinks £699 pp if I book this week then £630pp

You'll love it as will your kids. Pro-tip, MSC are the only cruise line where kids go free but the on board facilities for Royal Caribbean are better.

I wouldn't go with any other company other than Royal Caribbean. Couldn't see they could have done more without being intrusive and found it pretty good value (10 day Caribbean cruise).

Med cruise with Royal Caribbean would be my vote at that time of year.

I can't think of anything worse (no offence :p) than a cruise. Being on a floating food court/ shopping mall seems like a total waste. With barely any time to see the places you stop at, or just the port areas, you just are floating about. Why even travel to other places? Just sit just outside Portsmouth and be done with it.

I just think of old people who can't fathom the logistics of orgaising a real holiday.

IMO, of course :p
