hi

after playing some gt last night im becoming impatient with the ps3 loads times on my 1st gen 60gb model

so what i was thinking was to install a SSD now does this work ? and is it worth it?

also would a seagate hybrid drive a better alternative and work?

Will it be actually worth it? From my experience the PS3 only installs a tiny bit of the game to hard disk does it not?

A lot of money for a few minutes saved over a year!

Totally depends on what games your looking to play. Its becoming more common with newer games though that if there is an option for an install the ssd drives are coming out on top.

It all comes down to how much your willing to spend.

i was thinking about doing this too until i saw a vid on youtube showing circuit de la sarthe loading up with an ssd and i compared it to my 40gb ps3 and there was only around 3-4 seconds difference in loading time

and i heard ssd have a built in defrag like thing that works when the disc is idle and it doesnt work with a ps3 as it doesnt go idle and once the disc has been filled it doesnt matter what you delete you can't install anything else? no idea if that's true or not?

There's all sorts of ways that a SSD needs to be treated differently in comparison to a normal hdd, things such as Trim, garbage collection, the fact it shouldn't be defragged etc, the PS3 doesn't cater for these so many of the advantages are lost.

it's a bad idea basically. Lots of money for next to no improvement.

Essentially what Streeteh said... if you've money to burn, nobody's gonna stop you, but it really wouldn't be worth it.

This.

im sure Sony are aware of the increasing load times with new games, GT5 was a big surprise for me, I also own a 60gb first gen model.

I would consider buying an SSD too but I think I am just going to wait to see if Sony announce any changes to combat this problem in 2011

Dont waste your money, Just buy a decent normal hdd. Regarding GT5 load times am really not seeing the problem, I did initial install took 30mins not this hour people mentioned. The in-game loads are quick enough. (Im using a 250GB WD HDD not sure of model i just know its before they made their drives green, blue, black etc)
