Currently have a archos 605 as my mp3 player but its to big just to use as an mp3 player, so I thinkign about getting an ipod. But I really dont want to use itunes, which I why I got the archos, as you can just use it as an external device.

Is there any software you can use instead of using itunes?

You can use the ipod as an external device, just select 'enable disk use'. It'll then show up as an external storage device...

As for not using itunes, I dont know if you're using mac os or windows - but itunes really is second to none on the mac platform..

I can't really comment on the most recent version, but before I switched the latest itunes release was running brilliantly on my pc.. Is there a specific reason you dont like itunes?

Other than that - not got much advice I'm afraid..

The clever bods will probably have some more ideas :)

Ive had about 4 iPods, and never used iTunes.

I use Anapod Explorer, which is a drag and drop system, similar to Windows Explorer.

Try iTunes before rejecting it.

Who knows, you may find it works well with the iPod.

itunes isn't that bad, it does what it does very well.

The itouch is a great product, easily the best mp3 player i have ever had !

This sounds perfect, I just want to be able to use it like my archos. If I want to swap music with mates ets I can just plug my archos in and transfer what I want.

There's a good reason why you're not allowed to do this in many programs.

Since using a iriver H140 for a while, if I were to buy a new MP3 player UMS and Rockbox support is a must. UMS so I can just use Windows Explorer NOT the software needed to copy/rebuild database, and Rockbox, as it's really powerful, flexible open source with wide codec support, and can build it's own databse. My brothers Samsung takes ages to build database (about 20+ minutes) although at least seen as a UMS device so you can copy music in Windows Explorer, but you can't browse by directory in the MP3 player, so must re-build the database.

Still F5ing?

Like you wouldn't believe!!

This is the situation..

Desk - Unattainable due to balls'ed car!
RAM - Arrived
Mac Pro - Due 26/03/08
Mouse, Speakers, 1TB HDD - Due 28/03/08

Seriously, the earliest date for those 3 items above was the 28/03/08

UMS basically means when plugged in it's seen as a hard drive. I had a MP3 player that didn't, you had to use the included software to "sync" so if you change OS or it no longer works (say in Vista) your MP3 player is useless..unless keep an old PC just for syncing music. Although I guess if you buy a Apple you should be ok.

Rockbox is a alternative firmware/software for MP3 players, basically it's for several Mp3 players, not just for one make/model. There's Rockbox for several Apple Ipods, plus iriver and a few others. Although stock firmware "works" Rockbox has added lots more.

Different font sizes (more lines on the screen at one time)
Themes
Different audio codec support (has added flac, mpc to my iriver over stock)
Safer boot firmware
Rebuilds database on it's own.
Games, text reader
Crossfade, crossmixer...kitchen sink etc.
Adds codec support to Mp3 players, ie you can play ogg and flac on a ipod!
Open source, basically YOU can fix a bug if you're able. Also if you find bugs/request something report them and will be fixed/might be added by another programmer. There's too many things in Rockbox to post here as I'll be all day.

Read up here..

Not sure about the ipod's but on the iriver it doesn't replace anything (if you don't want it to) as the main firmware is still there (by pressing a certain key press you boot up in original firmware) otherwise it boots up in Rockbox. There's a bootloader...a bit like multiple operating systems on a PC.

I gather most on here own an ipod and Iam thinking off getting one, just need a few questions answering if poss.

When your listening to a DJ mix ie a continuous 60 min .mp3, is there anyway to skip to say 30mins into the mix, or do you just have to cut the mix up on your pc using a mp3 splitter?

If your listening to a mix then turn your ipod, when you turn it back on can you carry on listening to where you left off?

Can you play .avi's on it aswell?

Thinking off getting an 8GB nano, as ive got a archos 605 160GB and just like the idea off its small size and weight to carry around with me.

As iam currently travelling my plan would be too copy some music from my archos to a pc then transfer it to the ipod just using the ipod as an external device, that possiable?

Is there an advantage to using itunes rather than just using the ipod as an external device?

Last thing ive seen a 8GB for 120pounds, in NZ which seems to be the going rate in the UK. My last leg off my trip I will be going to Thailand does anyone know if they are much cheaper there?

Apologize for all the questions by the way. :)
