I'd really fancied a Surface Pro since they came out, and they are a decent bit of kit - but they have a serious drawback that is annoying me too much: When I connect a second screen, and I run a game on it - the other screen is mega-slow.
I guess it just doesn't have the grunt with the i7 U CPU. Adding a fan made a massive difference, as the i7 was thermally throttling due to the GPU component running at max when gaming, causing the CPU to be limited to 700Mhz! lol. At least that's not happening anymore.
Still - not enough power to not be annoying all the time.
Looking at gaming laptops at the moment - A 2nd hand one for about £600 would be my preference (about £100 more than I'd get for selling the Surface Pro 3).
But I'm thinking - Would I be just as well off with current gen AMD APU?
I'm not expecting to actually play games on high settings - the main thing I'm playing at the moment is Motorsport Manager, and I'm playing that in 2D mode!! My other game of choice tends to be Civ, which again isn't something you really need FPS for.
Just want something that's snappy as a desktop replacement, but can play a game in a window whilst letting me watch youtube.
Can't be a desktop, as I travel quite a bit. Just don't want to waste £300+ on a "gaming laptop" when its not really needed.
Any advice on the AMD APUs?
(Same Ryzen+Vega APUs aren't out yet, but can't be helped)
