Thinking ahead to Skylake

This will probably be my next upgrade. I've been really pleased with the 2500k and I'm expecting a move to Skylake to be a decent upgrade. From what I've read there seems to be decent support for new interfaces, DDR4 (hopefully a reasonable price by then) and with luck the next gen of GPUs will be out.

Any speculation if there will be greater than quad cores available? I'm planning ahead as I expect that now we have 8core consoles support for greater than four cores is inevitable.

I'd say it was unlikely as it would end up cannibalising sales of the X99 platform. I think you'd need to get a X99 system in order to get a 6 or 8 core CPU system.

I think I read Skylake will be on X100? Would you have to go to something like Skylake-E for the 6 or 8 cores? If so I'm guessing CPU's would be in the £400-500 range?

Isn't Skylake-E delayed until 2016?

Sounds reasonable and there is always a delay before the "E" versions come out. Really could do with some direct 8 core competition from AMD to keep prices reasonable but I'm not holding my breath on that one. At least it gives me longer to save up!

Thanks mate for responding.

Will the normal quad core Skylake processors that is supposedly being released next year have any performance advantages clock for clock over Haswell-E and Broadwell?

I'm not too sure, Skylake is supposed to be on 14nm so you would expect it to be faster and use less energy. Not so sure on heat dissipation as these smaller process chips don't seem to be running that cool.

Hopefully someone who knows a bit more about the manufacturing process will chip in.

I have heard that Broadwell is supposed to be on 14nm as well thought I am
not sure if these will be compatible with the same socket as Haswell-E.

Yes I was reading something on that today. Looks like there will be some overlap of Broadwell-E and Skylake. I think Broadwell-E will be X99 and Skylake X100 but don't quote me on that!

I am just trying to establish if X99 would be the best and most further proof root to go until 2016-2017.

If you're planning on doing a brand new build and not in a rush I would def go X99. More cores, DDR4, Broadwell -E support next year.

If the Haswell -E chips are optimized like the Devil's Canyon chips are along with using Solder not TIM, extra cores and cache. Then the Haswell -E chips are going to be monsters.

If you can hold out, it will be worth it.

Yeah, I am planning to start saving up next month and should have enough money to move to a new platform by the end of this year.

I take it going the X99 root would be best then?

Yeah, I think it's going to be worth the wait. Sounds like perfect timing for you as well then.

If i didn't have such a impulsive way of thinking, I would have waited myself :p

I like to mess with all the new stuff as soon as I can, really liking Z97 + 4790K, but no doubt will pick up X99 at some point as well :o

Fortunately finances keep me from being impulsive so it's saving and waiting for X100 for me. I really must apply for some better paying jobs ;)
