Been ages since posting in this forum!

Bit of outside input welcomed here, as I'm looking for ideas really...

Currently I have a 55 reg BMW 320cd (M Sport jobbie) Coupe, and much as I like the looks of the car, it feels a tad bland and not overly fun; hard to put a finger on that comment - I guess it's just the 6-7 years of driving diesel cars.

I'm doing a 60 mile round trip to work daily, and occasional weekend use - it doesn't have to be a diesel, so I have been looking at going back to petrol.

The trade in on the BM isn't great - getting quotes in the range of 2500-3500, one place did say they could go to 4000 though - that was against a Suzuki Swift 1.6 Sport I looked at.

Looking to spend about 5k - fancied something a bit fun, maybe a 'hot hatch' - a reliable motor would be nice, maybe one not massively expensive to fix; I have also been looking at a Mini Cooper S (might be expensive to fix) and also looked at a 2.0 Turbo Seat Leon.

Open to ideas fellow OcUKers - not sure the wife will want me using the trade in and money on a second motorcycle unfortunately :D

Cheers

Maybe 4500-5000, last time I checked - it might be an option, unfortunately I'm an impulse type at times - so chances are I'll be trading this weekend... damn you temptation to drive new things!!!

The total spend will be inc. trade in, so I'm only looking at second hand 2003-2010 types I suspect for 5 grand, but it'll only be for ferrying my fair weather riding *** to work, when it's too cold and wet for the bike (or I charlie bravo alpha).

Oooooooh Focus STs might be in my range.... :D

At this budget, a Focus ST would not be:

a reliable motor would be nice, maybe one not massively expensive to fix;

They have the chance to throw up some very big bills, let alone considering the fuel economy for commuting 14k miles a year

The Seat Leon with the TFSI has the same risks too, albeit with slightly better fuel economy.

Don't get a Suzuki swift sport. Don't get me wrong i love mine but its not really a nice place to be on a commute. Its noisy and rattly it has 0 sound deadening and the stock audio system is super crap. But I have put 45k miles on it, all i have done is service 3 times and just about to put my second pair of tyres and it drives wonderfully.

Had a mini cooper and loved it still miss that car. so much fun to drive and a nice place to be. but not to everyones taste. Not the cheapest to look after but not more than a BMW obviously.

If it were me though I would prefere a bigger car

Thanks for the tips.

The Wife will be driving too - she hates the BMW due to it's size (sigh) and it's frankly mental steering - not sure if its a fault, the 18s, or low profile tyres; but it tracks literally every imperfection in the road and can sometimes snatch the wheel. I've got used to it, but it freaks the misses out.

The clio with cup setups are mean tot be good fun :)

Have you looked at the Mazda 3/6 mps?

A 3 would sit in your hatch category saw a nice one on eBay:

He's detailed that the more expensive (VVT/Timing Chain) work has already been done.
He also says its been remapped, doesnt say by who tho, I'd check that if interested.

My only concern would be checkin if it's had the HPFP upgrade or not, that'd be my next port of call if not. It's decently priced considering the description and work carried out, I had my timing chain/VVT done last week at Mazda just shy of £400 for labour, I got my parts imported tho as mazda wanted silly money.

Tax isnt the nicest mind :(

I looked at the Mazdas when I was looking for something similar, only reason I didn't go for one is that they seem to drink fuel

6k for an 06 car with 80k miles!? My 56 reg Octavia VRS (same engine) had similar miles when I bought it a few months ago for £3500

Yes there's no audi badge and the doors dont go "thunk" as well as the audi, but its pretty much the same underneath - I cant see £2500 of extra value in those
