potentially after a new build as last time i was on a tight budget, and now its more flexible

currently thinking of something along these lines:

ideally want to shave a few quid off it i guess and im tempted to wait till r600 hits the shelves along with the 8800ultra in the slim hope some competition encourages some price reductions....or if r600 defies the rumourmill and is actually a decent card

the sli board is to keep my options open for the future, although not a certainty i guess (and of course would be swapped for a crossfire board if i go ati and want that option)

oh and im no overclocker before people to tell me to get a slower cpu and OC it or crucial memory etc ;)

to compliment my 320 and 160gig storage drives since my last 36gig raptor went bang?

could just swap it out for another big drive though i guess

Ye I would also question the Raptor.

If you buy a second drive as well (a much larger one) then you could install a few games on the Raptor and you'll be fairly happy. But the difference is basically negligable if all you're doing is gaming, and I find the 10,000 RPM drives a bit of a gimmick for the price you have to pay for them.

I agree with waiting for the R600, hopefully it'll cause Geforce to drop their prices on the GTX if it can keep up.

+ As you're not a clocker, you could save 30 quidish if you bought this mobo instead:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-221-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=205
but as we're talking 1k for a computer, it's not really worth risking.

The E6600 is a good buy atm, I plan to get that or wait until julyish to see what else comes out.

I wouldn't bother with the 36gb Raptor as it isn't hugely faster than a good 7200rpm drive although I have only seen the benchmarks for the older 8mb cache version. I would still probably go for something like the Western Digital AAKS 320gb hard drive though.

I'd change the DVDRW to a SATA model, Samsung and NEC do good versions.

Other than that I might swap the OCZ for a Corsair HX 620w but that may be just down to personal preference. :)

aye contemplating just a 3rd larger drive (would still use the 160 and 320) and just move the page file as atm page file + game on same drive in some games seems to cause a lot of issues (for me atleast on my current rig)

as for changing things, its why i posted it for, its more of a template to manipulate until i have an ideal price:performance rig that will allow me to have oodles of fun in games on a widescreen monitor, whilst also giving me the necesary storage space and and case space to install these ever increasing size gfx cards (hence the eclipse)

spw: whats do great about sata? they offer any real advantages other than making use of the 1/2 a dozen sata ports most mobos have these days over IDE? and do they have any downsides, read somewhere some seem to have writing issues under certain cd/dvd burning apps

You really dont need to go Core 2 Duo if your not overclocking:

Ill have the spec up in a minute lol. Stupid internet. :(

Here we go:

SATA is just neater would be my main reasoning, the transfer rates won't be any faster but since you only get one IDE port on most socket 775 motherboards I'd try not to waste them. :)

An E6300(1.86ghz) is roughly comparable to an X2 4200(2.2ghz) so I'd choose the Core2Duo, it is normally around the same price but has a lot more headroom for overclocking. :)

//edit stickroad, you do realise that is a Core2Duo specification you have put up even though you said that it wasn't necessary unless you were overclocking?

//edit #2 ah yes, needed a hard refresh to see it. :)

stick, why the m2n32 ws pro? is it viable to save some cash and go for the n32 sli dlx version, which would also allow me to free up a pci slot as i could drop my wireless card then? and knocks a wad off the price which was the plan :D

Raptor = loud :P plus my pc is never off so it wouldnt help with boot times and a decent SATA drive is fine for games, music etc :)

Core 2 Duo "for the win"!! (wont let me put f.. t.. w..) lolz?

AMD's are ok but c2d pwns there ass all the way :D come on you know you cant resist a bit of overclocking..

AMD's are ok but not as good as C2D thats why i stuck my AMD in a lil case for file server :D

Anyway just my opinion is C2D is better, but both systems seem good :) better without the rapter

aye swapped out rapter for a 320 to compliment my current 320 should run fine, also means my sister gets a 160hdd when/if she gets this machine

you wont need a gtx for that size of screen, i would go for the 8800 gts that should save you over a hundred quid also change the motherboard for an asus p5b deluxe, and the 36GB raptor is pointless and too expensive the new seagates are just as fast, why dont you go for a cheaper case, thermaltake soprano is really good for the price tag

wouldnt that depend on how long i wish to keep the gtx? even if it gets phased out quickly as gfx seems to spiral exponentially out of control it would last longer than a gts surely?

Id say it would and personally would go for the GTX but thare again depends what your going to do with it, you could always upgrate to a huuugggeeeee screen hehe!!

the difference in performance between them is not noticeable at the res you will be playing at, im pretty sure the GTS will be able to play nearly every game at 60fps constant at your screens res as long as you dont put a stupid amount of AA on. 4xAA is enough

look at it this way

GTX is £370
GTS is £170 (320mb version on this week only)

you would save £200, in a years time you could sell the GTS for £100 roughly, therefore in a years time you could take the £200 saved plus this £100 and you would have £300 to spend on a graphics card, although i would suggest only spending £200 again in a years time and saving the £100 for the year after that, therefore in a years time you would have saved money plus have a card faster than a gtx

in your original post you were looking at ways of saving money, now tell us realistically what you plan to use the PC for? and dont just say gaming, we need specifics like which games? my x1900xt plays source at over 100fps constant on max settings, thats the only game i play so i dont need a graphics upgrade for a long time, got an e6600 but i just mainly browse the internet, write essays, watch movies, listen to music, my pc is worth over 2 thousand easy and i could have saved a lot of money for the tasks i use it for
