Thinking of an upgrade...

I currently have 3 machines, well 2 nd a half machines as one doesn't have any ram so is just there in case of breakdown.

The machines are:

Main Machine:
Opteron 170
2gb RAM
X800GTO2 reflashed as x850
4 * 250gb HD striped and mirrored

Garage Machine:
*2 3800
1GB RAM
X300
1 * 250 Gb hard disk

1/2 Machine
AMD 64 3200
ATI Crossfire board
250 gb hard disk.
no ram.

Now I am thinking of a bit of an upgrade to a intel machine so am thinking along lines of the following:

Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 MB (£43.46)
Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz (800FSB) (£46.99)

Now my question is would this be an upgrade, speed wise - hence the reason I put this in CPU area, to my main machine in std form / or overclocked or would I be better off saving up for a better Motherboard/CPU and Ram when the cash allows.

Main uses are development and occasional gaming.

regards,

Matt

hi i can tell you from first hand experience asrock motherboards are poor overclockers it a good idea to spend a little bit more on it :) looking around on the forums people do like that cpu seems it can be oc pretty well

The ASRock made sense when good DDR2 RAM was £100/Gb but now, when it's £15/Gb and with PCIe 8800GTs now on the market for about £115 delivered I'd really have to suggest something a bit more extensive for an upgrade.

I take it you'll be wanting to take the RAID array with you following the upgrade?

Thanx for replies...

Yes to wanting to take raid array with me.

Think I'll hang off for a bit until I get more money together.

regards,

Matt
