My current system is....

Mobo- DFI lanparty UT 250Gb nf3
CPU - socket 754 AMD 64 3000+
GC- ATI radeon 9600 pro
HDD- 2* 80 (raided) and 1* 160 Gb (boot drive)
PSU - 500W
RAM- 1024mb (crap mems but wish to transfer too)

on top of that i have a gd ish CPU cooler, DVD-RW , CD- RW, and HDD which i wish to transfer to new system.

for the upgrade i want a conroe processor and a decent board plus a pci e Graphics Card.

my budget is 525 pounds but that will go up to 760 quid on the 26th as i get paidthen.

if there is enough left i would also like to consider a new screen as i have a 17 in CTR monitor which is taking up 50 % of the desk space.

also i was wondering if i can use my current PSU for my next system.

thanks in advance, SHImy

o. well the big wall of 525 pound budget will have to be demolished.

i guess thats a no to the monitor for now.

this is what im thinking so far...

something like that? im not too up on intel stuff though so double check all that will be compatible... you have about £140 left to either upgrade memory and maybe CPU or upgrade your graphics card.

depends what you use the PC for really.

mainly games and work( crappy coursework) my comp is left on as i use it for internet calls.

in that case...

swap out that 7600gt and go for this instead...

You could transfer all that if you used an Asrock board. Even in the short term it might be worth considering, they do boards that take agp and ddr1.

They are a budget brand and do not overclock well, though Ive seen hardcore mods for them.

Dont get the 6300 when the 6400 is only 30 quid more.

Most DDR2 memory even economy brands will operate way over spec, 25% or so

Your choice of video card and amount of main memory will determine what level of games you can play, cpu speed really isnt much of a factor in comparison

cool. but i think a new board will be needed.
i dont want a complete budget upgrade, one of the reason i wanted a upgrade was for the PCI e vid cards. and im not going to be fussy about the Graphics card for now as im waiting till direct x 10 compat card comes out this november.

In that case then hold off on any upgrade until the 2nd gen of D10 cards are out and see what Mobos are on offer and what AMD has brought out to combat Conroe, which incidently and on Intels past form will probably be on its 3rd socket revision (all incompatable with the last) by then.

at the wait... that is if i will.

iv waited a bit for conroe and to be honest .. i cant wait anymore!
EDIT.so wont the new DX10 cards on pci e? wont they work on mobos that are out now?

Im sure they will but its a major step so i think its worth the wait, just like the clever people held off buying an ATI 1800 series card cos they knew something else was just round the corner.
As for the Mobos, Vista when it comes and DX10 will inspire the mobo makers to produce something special, i feel its a little too close to buy new hardware just now.
By the way my Gfx history is GF3Ti200-Ti4200-9800Pro-7800gtx, all of which ive clocked hugely and paid far les than the launch price for.

Theres always something else to wait for though. If you went the asrock way they have agp and pci-e on the same board, I think a few manufacturers do that actually.
I went for a pci-e board with onboard graphics to bridge the gap.

500w is enough unless its a crap psu. What make and what info does it have written on the side

Also I should thing that your PSU will have to go as even if it's a good quality 500w and had the power to run it. I doubt (unless it's farely new) it has the right connectors for modern mobos.

Your existing HSF will have to go also :( Sorry.

Interesting point pegasus1 about graphics hishory. Just for fun, here's mine with mods:

GF2MX yuk
GF3 Vanilla >rebuild HSF with AS3, OC'ed core and mem 30%
9500 Pro> flashed with 9700Pro Bios, arctic cooler and heavy OC
9800 Pro> flashed with 9800XT bios, Zalman Dual Heat pipe, slightly over XT speeds.
6800LE > Fully unlocked, Volt mod, arctic cooler, massive OC 440MHz core !!!
X850XTPE> Arctic cooler, slight OC

Amazing how much extra you can get out of these cards. My favourites where the 9500P and the 6800LE for free performance.

Sorry for going off topic shimy182

its fine about going off topic. thanks for the posts regarding the PSU.

my PSU has the following connectors :-

1* 4 pin which goes in to the mobo

another lot of cables going in to the mobo (20 pins)

and a lot of normal molex

The PSU is really crap. its made by a unheard brand called MAGNA. and i just bought it for the cheapness.

can someone spec me a good enough PSU please.
