Hi all I was just hoping you guys could clear a few things up for me, I am currently with Virgin Broadband but am considering changing but I was wondering if I get a BT line this will cost me installation fee + £11.25 per month (bt line rental) + £17.50 a month (be subscription) so this is actually working out dearer than Virgin is this correct ?

get o2 instead. it's £9.79 for the same package if you use an o2 mobile. and even if you don't, you could get an o2 sim and top it up £10 every 3 months to get the same deal. so that's £13.12 a month plus you'll have £40 credit on the sim at the end of your 1st year.

(admittedly be offer a free static ip on that package whereas o2 don't but other than that it's identical)

How much is Virgin Broadband a month?

£11.25 + £17.50 = £28.75 a month is what you would pay for BT

I think I pay £25 for the 20mb package

The missis has a mobile contract with O2, is O2 as good as Be and also what is the advantage of a static IP ?

It's effectively the same service, since O2 own Be it's the same technology and the same infrastructure. Don't worry about a static IP, you'd know if you needed one.

Have you given any thought to the level of service you might receive from O2/Be, for instance distance from the exchange and a rough idea of the sort of speeds you could expect. If you're miles away and end up with poor speeds you might regret jumping ship.

Not sure about speeds and distance I think we are about 3miles away not sure though my postcode is B63 2LB

Kitz guestimates the distance at just over 2km by road. If that proves to be the case and translates into an attenuation of roughly 30dB you might end up syncing at around 15mb. It's a bit of a stab in the dark without any real stats to go on though.
