hey guys,

my friends dad has a 2008 yamaha R6 for sale, it was his track bike before he got a R1.

now its not ride able atm and needs some work to it, this is what it needs.

1. needs a whole new faring (old OEM was sold on ebay, and the track faring was also sold)
2. needs rear sets (again sold on ebay)
3. both brakes are off the bike atm and need stripping and rebuilding
4. needs tyres
5. has no MOT or TAX

now im looking at taking this off him and building it up to be a road legal superbike again, but im not sure if i should.

if i get it, wherw can i get a full OEM yamaha faring kit in candy red? (tank in that colour)
he has not told me how much he wants, just keeps asking me for offers, but tbh, i dont know how much it is worth.

so what would you guys do? :)

Depends on mileage and condition, but based on what you have said i would offer £3-3.5k tops.

Would make an ideal track project :p

For a 2008 r6, without fairing, needs work, ex track bike, no mot or tax? More like £3.5k tops.

This, I had an email last month from Focused Events selling off their ex-track 2011 R6's with 2k-5k miles for £4699 with road fairing etc. I'm sure if you shop around you will find 08+ models with low mileage for sub 5k, I paid 5.5k for an 09 with 3k miles from a dealer.

As for the work you mention, second hand rear sets can be had quite cheap. Servicing the brakes is pretty easy to do yourself, set aside £200~ for tires (depends what you go for), tax IIRC is £57 and an MOT should be around £30 if all is okay. The big bill will be fairing, does it at least come with lights and all the necessary wiring? Depending on what you go for you could potentially sink a lot of money on this.

There's potentially £1k+ worth of bits to buy unless you get some good second hand deals. Thinking about it, I would go in with an offer of £3k given how much it would cost to get road worthy and being an ex track bike.

OEM fairing will cost ya bigtime... they are NOT cheap... however, Chinese fairing, decent spray jobs on them and cost around £250 for injection moulded, count on around £100 import tax... so for £350 job done and it'll look like new.

When I replaced my fairing, the tail was perfect fit... the front with light was spot on but the side fairing didn't fit perfect, no one would notice apart from me though lol. People with keen eyes though will and will ask you the same question, where's the original. I kept all mine to prove I'd not smashed it to bits incase they were wondering.

However, bear in mind, as that R6 ever been smashed? Has he stated? Do you wanna use something that's slid across 100 yards of tarmac? UNless you're getting a steal and by that I mean around £3k, I wouldn't touch it at all... I mean, it's 6 years old... been tracked... got missing parts that will cost you? Bear in mind... an original OEM fairing will be £1k +

Right now you're looking around £4,300 upwards for a mint low milage original in the 07-08'... with original fairing?

Putting a track bike back on the road is rarely cost effective. Performance Bikes used to do this from time to time and they nearly always ended up spending more than it would have cost to buy a decent non-tracked one.

Unless it's had some serious engine work to boost power or is dripping with trick track bits such as Ohlins suspension I wouldn't bother.

what bike you have currently? have you priced any insurance quotes up first for the r6?

id go for it if you can get it for a decent price

Lol I'm still on my cagiva mito evolution.

It's something that I'm planning to do slowly, i will either keep it for myself or flog it on, but tbh I will properly keep it for myself until I can get the bike i want! :)

£3.5k? Wow, that is cheap, snap it up. A few weekends with the spanners and you got your self a minter. Engine might need some love if it's been ragged round the track without regular oil changes and what have you.

A old biking buddy of mine got one of the new R6's. And I always said, it would be one other bike out side of Ducati that I would own.

After recent events, it seems it's the only bike in my option now lol.
