since i have been having some problems with my 295 i have been thinking about replacing it with a new card, i just had a bit of a think about it tho and back when i got the 295 it was to replace a gtx280, i didnt really see a lot of difference in games except maybe being able to have more aa

im thinking now about getting a 5850 or a 470
i know its a slower card but do you think i would notice much of a difference with this system? i know that my processor would be a bottleneck for the faster cards and it most likely is with my 295 too

Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600
Corsair Dominator 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 XMS2 PC2-8500C5 TwinX
Asus P5Q Deluxe
Corsair HX 850W Psu
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

i game at 1680 x 1050 and while having aa enabled is nice i wouldnt mind missing out on it in some games

Yeah, and at the res, your cpu could become the bottleneck. I would overclock that E8600 first before you get a 5850 or 470. Then you'll see a significant gain from the stock cpu + 295 ;)

That's because of your E8600 at stock speed is holding back the 295, which is why you don't see much increase in performance comparing to 280. Like others already suggested, overclock your E8600 to 4.2GHz+. You have one of the best overclocking 775 motherboard...it's a crime to use the CPU at stock speed :D

thanks for the replies :)
i have a decent cooler too (titan fenrir) so ill definetly have a look at overclocking
problem is that im useless at it :o

the reason i want to replace the 295 is because its started to get artifacts in some of my games so im pretty sure it on its way out

It's easy with that board - simply increase the FSB to get the CPU around 3.6GHz (should do it on stock volts or a little bit above) and make sure the RAM divider keeps the RAM running at close to its rated speed. Crazy to buy the Deluxe version and PC8500 RAM and not OC

Even after doing that u may find the GTX295 is a bit much for your resolution and would get fine performance on a 5850.

well i just installed me new HIS 5850 and im well impressed :D
so far it plays everything as good as my 295 did

i always thought that the microstutter i was getting on the 295 had been fixed over time by the drivers but now i have got the 5850 it seems a lot smoother

i guess i got used to it and now that its gone i can really see the difference it made :p

its a lot cooler too and it seems silent compared to the old card :)
i know it sounds weird but i feel like i can enjoy pc gaming agian now and i havent really been able to do that since my 8800gt, there have always been some slight problems

You bought a 295GTX for 1680x1080 no wonder you see little differance between a 280 and a 295.. that is rather silly imo.

i dont run AA or AF and run at 1680X1050 and my 4850 ATi still runs everything at high res with 80-120fps depending on the game in dx9. looks fine to me.

i mainly play:
mw2
b:bc2
CS: source
supreme commander 2

spec:-
PII 940BE @ 3.4
4gb ddr2 hyper x
4850 ATi
22" lcd iiyama

Same. I've got a 4870 1GB and play at 1680x1050. I only really play L4D 1, TF2 and CSS at the moment and it runs them perfectly. Still doesn't stop my upgrade itch for a 5870 though :/ I'm trying to hold out for the next gen of ati cards though if I'm going to upgrade. I want to start playing crysis and BFBC 2 on max you see.
