Thinking of getting a 144hz for gaming, will I be missing too much on image quality?

I currently have a Dell U2311H 23'' IPS monitor and I absolutely love it, never had any issues with it and image quality/colors are superb.

I've been playing a lot of CS:GO recently and it seems like 144hz is almost essential for these kinds of games. I've read so many positive things about these monitors and how smooth they are compared to regular 60hz monitors.

Anyway, I was thinking that this might be a cool Christmas present for my self but I am a bit worried that I might be missing too much on image quality and colors might look washed out compared to my current monitor.

I game a lot, mostly fps games but also RTS, lots of browsing and also Bluray movies.

So, should I get one and never look back (just like mechanical keyboards) or keep my Dell? Is it going to be much worse (image wise) than my Dell? And lastly, Benq monitors seem quite popular, which particular model would you recommend?

Judging by your enthusiasm towards your IPS panel, I'd guess like me you'd find looking at a TN panel pretty hard to stomach if IQ is something you appreciate. The 144hz panel screens would be a nice investment for gaming however so I recommend running your Dell side by side with a gaming screen :)

I got a 4k TN panel and prefer my 1440p IPS over it. TN when done right isn't to bad but color shift is really a problem for me. I've gotten to Gold Nova 4 on my 60hz monitor with about 28ms input lag and have been fine.

My opinion on 144hz is that if you arn't going pro then you should be okay with 60hz and the only 144hz panels out there are TN which I will not touch again.

Not to be a Rog Swift fanboy, especially as it will probably break soon ;););), but in terms of colour reproduction once you calibrate it a bit, it's superb. I've got it next to my quality Dell IPS, and it really is impressive for a TN. Not far behind at all.

The only real issue is the vertical colour shift, which is awful compared to IPS, but in games you really do not notice it. Seriously. And how much do you move around anyway PC gaming?

Not to flog a dead horse, but the issue stems beyond simply viewer position in relation to the monitor. On TN panels shades generally become less saturated further down the screen, due to their vertical viewing angle restrictions. The angle subtended by the eye when viewing the top vs. bottom of the screen is significantly different.

Whilst you may not notice a pronounced shift, some users do or indeed notice the effects of the shift (i.e. a reduction in shade vibrancy towards the bottom of the screen and a reduction in apparent shade variety). This is explored extensively in my review of the PG278Q which certainly isn't immune to such issues. For games like CS:GO, though, the 144Hz refresh rate coupled with respectable image quality on monitors like the PG278Q and g2460Pg works very nicely.

I'd say stick with IPS. To me image quality and colour saturation is more important than 144Hz even though I probably spend half the time on my PC gaming. I actually ran my 120Hz panel at 60Hz most of the time as it used to cause issues on my dual monitor setup dragging windows and playing videos in the second screen. YMMV but personally even of FPS games like CS:GO I never noticed much difference between 60Hz and 120Hz!

If I were you I'd be more inclinded to upgrade to 4k, 1440p or a 21:9 aspect rather than worrying too much about the refresh rate. Whichever you choose personally I think you should stick with IPS though. There's no going back to TN IMO!

Whereas I'm the complete opposite - for me 60Hz v 120Hz is night and day with 60Hz feeling like there is a slight rubber band between me and the input and fast 180 degree flicks, etc. feel "spongy". However I can't personally tell any difference between 120Hz v 144Hz but for any real gaming I'd take the refresh rate over the image quality any day aslong as the colours are atleast tolerably natural (or failing that neutral) looking.

Not a fan of BenQ monitors personally - the larger majority that I've experience of look nasty out the box and while the number I've had hands on use of for any length of time is relatively small none of them calibrated to anything that great without a huge compromise somewhere. Couldn't be happier with the ROG Swift aslong as it doesn't die on me like way too many seem to :(

144Hz = smoother motion, less motion blur, but colour quality will be garbage compared to an IPS panel.
All depends on what is more important to you.
I personally didn't like BenQ monitor, but very happy with AOC one. You can get them for well under £200 now too.
Should also be mentioned, 144Hz requires a lot more processing power than 60Hz, and still quite a large % of games don't support >60Hz frame rates at all or without issues I.e. Skyrim, Dark Souls 2.

For FPS games, they are great. For everything else, they are a bit meh.
Try one out and decide for yourself ^_^

I bought the Asus ROG Swift earlier this month and i find the image quality fine, easily the best TN panel monitor i have ever used.

And gaming is now a complete joy with g-sync :)
