Thinking of getting a 360

I already have a 20 gig pro – bought in March 07, which I have only just recently started using again (L4D :D), and frankly I think it’s on it’s last legs – the CD drive became an issue only a few months after I got Forza 2.

I bought the extended warranty from M$, they took my dosh straight away, but I never did get anything in the post to confirm that I had cover, what to do, what it cover etc – so I expect that if I were to ship it off the repair the dodgey drive would get sorted.
Now, I’m monumentally lazy at times and the hassle I think it will be to email/talk to M$, cart the damn xbox off to the pick up point blaa blaa blaa – I’m just thinking, they’re cheap enough, why not just buy a new one!

So, I’ve seen there’s now a 60 gig Pro available, and if I’m right, it will probably come with HDMI and will not (fingers crossed) sound like a 747 on takeoff.

So my question fellow gamers – does the 60 gig come with the audio dongle like the Elite? I use optical out via toslink to my speakers, so will need this, I’d also like HDMI, do all the 60s come with it?

Cheers,
Scort.

No the pro does not come with the audio dongle but they do come with HDMI. A little cunning can modify the existing component cable in order to accept both HDMI and optical outputs. By cunning i mean smashing the plastic end of the cable against a wall until it falls off, exposing the metal interior which is small enough to allow a HDMI cable to be plugged in at the same time.

Noise varies from unit to unit, mine is relatively quiet when the disk isn't spinning (still miles louder than my PS3 though) but incredibly loud when the disk is spinning. Fortunately a 60gig has plenty of room for installing games so that isn't so much of an issue.

Picked up a 60gig today – rare as rocking horse too, most of the places I went to had sold out.

Still noisy as sin, but slightly less so than my 20gig.

As Wyrdo said, install to CD, the disk drive is the biggest offender when it comes to noise with the 360. To install it, point at the game you have in the drive in the 'My Xbox' section, press Y and select install to hard drive. This will take approx 5-10mins but will mean the disk won't spin while playing a game, thus reducing the noise significantly.

Some games don't run well when installed though so avoid it with them. The two i know of are Halo 3 and GTAIV.

Oh, no, the CD drive is a lot quieter, it’s the machine ‘at idle’ that’s almost just as loud as my 20gig, so installs make no difference (I did them all anyway).

Hey ho, guess the PS3 spoilt me when it comes to the noise levels, funny thing though – the new 60gig wouldn’t recognise the GoW2 CD earlier; it wasn’t dirty and just showed as “play DVD”. Good ol’ 360 hardware :D
