Thinking of getting a different car

Hi guys,

I currently have a '98 Clio 2 1.4 RT 5DR of which it does the job. However, recently I have discovered I do a lot of miles, especially for a student and seeing my gf which consists of a 4 hour drive. Consequently am thinking of getting some sort of diesel but it has to remain low on the insurance. So far I have been looking at the punto JTD - however I'd like something comfy and easy to drive with enough power for the motorway. Any recommendations?

Small diesels will not be noticeably more economical than small petrol cars, at least until your mileage starts getting the wrong side of 25,000.

What age Punto JTD are you looking at?

These are 1.9 80-90bhp Turbo Diesels and they really do go some in the Punto, the front end feels real heavy which makes the car feel like it handles better.

For the added premium of buying a diesel over a petrol you are unlikely to realise the savings unless you do uber miles or you are comparing a big engined petrol car to a diesel counterpart.

As an example not knowing your budget, Citroen C5 HDIs can be had for 4-6k with sensible mileage and are excellent motorway beasts.

For the journey the Punto will not be much more comfortable than the clio and from memory probably worse (unless its the new one) and considering the expense of purchasing (if its a newish one) you won't save money.

If you want a comfortable cruiser buy a mondeo, C5, Vectra

Budget around 2.2K.

306 1.9 DT should be able to get a face lift "s" reg for less that £2k, prob arouind £1,800. looks nice and fun to drive. Will do 100 easy and being a tubo will have nice pick up on motor ways for overtaking. Also if driven bellow 75-80 you should be able to get 55MPG+. Oh, and get a 3 door, the 5 look like poo imo.

I love mine and athough I alway flurt with the idea I can never foind something as nice and cheap to run for the price.

I have the punto with the 100 hp version of this engine and have found it to be great so far with the economy being rather pleasing- have had 60 to the gallon when driving in a rather sedate manner and anywhere between 42 and 49 when driving 'progressively'.

You'll spend £2k buying a 306 DT then spend another £2k fixing it only to find it still needs more work done to keep it on the road :p This is sadly speaking from experience so take the advice :o

Far better with something else imho :)

a 306DT will also screw mod to 1005bhp, just beating a veryon 0-250mph (kills it 0-60)

lol

in related reply nice sig joe t :D

i find that i fill up less if i drive something around the 1.6-2l mark but then again anything under that and i find myself ragging it senseless to get anywhere :D

How about the HDI? What do they normally get 0-60 stock? and with a remap?

xsara will be newer then the 306 for the same money and it's an identical car. you could get a 2000 HDi xsara for £2.5k. better bargain then a 306 imo

Around 10 secs iirc - but for motorways thats hardly important. Not sure what you would get with it mapped, I suppose that depends on the type of map you have done and if there are any other supporting mods. If you want to purely munch up the motorway miles while using as little fuel as possible, having it remapped to be faster probably wont help your cause.
