Thinking of getting a home bench and free weights. Spec me?

Around 5 years ago I got quite fit and defined and took the gym seriously for a couple of years. But following a serious illness my fitness became secondary and I put on a couple of stone in weight mostly around the stomach and thighs. I need to fix that. Although motivation is a real problem nowadays due to low testosterone and being on hormone replacements, I really can't accept it anymore and have to do something about it before it gets too bad. I've started walking 4 to 5 extra miles a day and have changed my diet to lose a little weight and more importantly to try to get some energy back.

It's slowly working and when I've lost another half a stone I want to get back into some mild weight training again. I just want to get lean and defined again rather than big. I'm getting older now anyway so it's just for my personal happiness and health rather than to look good. I don't have the time to get down the gym like I used to so I'm considering a bench and free weights for home. I appreciate a gym would be better but I don't think I could fit it in and if be likely to skip it the first cold day with my level of energy. A bench would allow me to do an hour in the evening when everyone has gone to bed.

So I'm looking for recommendations on what to look for in the weights and bench? For example the York B500 or 501 look interesting, a reasonable price and York seen to have various add on accessories to extend the exercises it will do. Is this a reasonable bench for a beginner? Are there any specific things to look out for, or to avoid, in a bench, bars and weights? I don't have a lot of space so a folding bench would be preferable but not a deal breaker. Any recommendations gratefully received.

everyone will recommend Olympic bars and Olympic plates. (google "olympic weights vs standard" if you don't know the difference)
Check the max weight of the bench and remember that includes your body weight.
