Thinking of getting a new cpu

well you could try an opty and get it to 2.8 although its probably not worth the extra 300mhz. Otherwise you could go dual core but I'm unsure as to whether oblivion is multi threaded, I'd look into that beforehand.

patience :p

a 3700SD @ 2.5 is a pretty good Chip.

Buut, You could go dual core and buy a Opteron 170 and clock it. This might well get 2.5 or 2.6 and would give you the ability to run things in the background without harming Oblivion's FPS as much

If oblivion is optimized for Dual CPU's then it would be worth upgrading to a Dual Core. Personally I would just go for a X2 3800+ as they offer great bang per buck and good overclocking ability.

If you are unable to get 'good' framerates in Oblivion I would question your configuartion rather than your system... OK you might be a bit cpu limited but it should still play awesome on your X1900.

Im playing the game at 1280x1024 with everything on max except ive got bloom instead of hdr, so i still need a new cpu.

If you're not getting good framerates on THAT setup then I despair :(

You could try dropping the AA to 4x - in my experience at resolutions as high as what you're playing at you don't need AA as much as there are hardly any jaggies anyway. It may, however, be the case that the game is a badly-coded resource whore just like Morrowind was, in which case you'll never get decent framerates out of it! :p
