Thinking of getting a new lens (Advice needed!) UPDATED: 16.02

I'm really starting to get into my 350D I purchased a while back and i'm in the mood to purchase a new lens. So far I've got the 17-55MM and the 50mm F1.8 but I'm using the 50mm more often because of the conditions I take photos in.

I can see myself taking more portraits and in low light conditions, I would like to get hold of another lens like my 50mm but with more zoomage (if you know what i mean :) I need something with a low f-stop so i can get a fast enough shutter speed without any blur.

Any ideas which one to get?

EDIT: Gone for the Sigma 50-150mm and its here :p

You could get a Canon 85mm F1.8 (£250) or 100mm F2 (£300) prime lens.

If you want a zoom lens with a wide aperture (F2.8) expect to pay more £££'s.
A Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 is around £600 and the Canon equivalent is even more expensive. Another option is the new Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 for £500

I am loving the 70-200mm F2.8 but its huge! Its got one of those leavers that allows for a mono tripod to be put on so i need something smaller. I am thinking of carrying this lens around me but need ideas for a low Fstop number and good zoom.

Any ideas?

Depends how much you want to spend. The Canon 24-70 2.8L is about £850 and will fit your needs. The sigma equivalent is around £300 I believe bit IQ is supposed to be lower and there's no HSM.

I want ideal a zoom up to about 150-200 if possible. I'm just looking whats avaliable but i've seen prices for lens drop dramatically on a certain aution site. Whats HSM? I know that IS (Image stabalizer)

Sigma also make a 50-150 F2.8 HSM for croped sensor digital cameras which is more compact and lighter then the full sized 70-200 F2.8. But for low light tele it is hard to go past a 135 F2 USM.

I mentioned the Sigma 50-150 in my post up there ^^^

A 200mm F2.8 will be big and heavy due the amount of glass needed and 72mm diameter.
If you want a light weight F2.8 zoom then join the back of the queue ;)

The Canon 135 F2 as mentioned by FranchiseJuan is an amazing lens. I'm buying one soon :)

HSM is Sigma's version of Canon USM. It's fast and silent auto focus :)

HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor)
This lens uses a motor driven by ultrasonic waves to provide a quiet, highspeed AF

I'd say your options are:

Sigma 50-150 2.8
Sigma 70-200 2.8

The latter is certainly handholdable, but the former is substantially smaller.

Just to be different, what about not compromising and going with a fixed length telephoto, say a 135mm Canon unit. That will be considerably faster than any zoom and will also have better image quality.

I would suggest the Canon 85F1.8 or 100F2 and the 200F2.8L as an alternative to the Sigma 70-200F2.8

If I didn't already have the Sigma, I would get a couple of Canon primes.

Thanks for the advice, I think what I need is to check out how what 150mm lens feels like. I dont know how much that is when looking through a lens so I need to see how much difference is needed and if i can live with a Fixed lens rather than a zoom lens.

Update: 16.02.07

I got my Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 And boy is it huge! And when its a HSM, its quiet! Will take some test subject soon and of the lens itself! I'm so happy! :D

Hurry up then, I'm considering that lens for the motocross, ideal range for me. If it's anything like as good as the sigma 70-200 F2.8 it should be a cracker.
