About ten years ago I got interested in digital photography, bought myself a FujiFilm S5500 (was pretty good back then!) and spent many months shooting all sorts and really learning how photography worked.

As I got more proficient I began to get irritated with the limitations of the camera and eventually lost interest (rather than upgrading, oddly).

I'm now getting the bug again and am looking for a decent entry-level DSLR which offers a decent level of manual control (be that through the body or lens). It's also my 40th this year so I can splash out a bit :p

I'm currently toying with either a Nikon D7000 or a Canon EOS 760d, which obviously have loads of pros and cons between them, but I'm unsure as to whether there are any good alternatives.

I like to shoot everything from macro stills to sports, landscapes to portraits so have no specific requirements on that front but if anyone has any good sources for trusted reviews (I recall StevesDigicams was big a while ago) or suggestions on cameras, I'm all ears.

Thanks

Can't comment on Nikon but if sports is really a consideration, you'll want the Canon 70D as it gives you 7fps over the 760D's 5fps. Doesn't sound much but it makes a big difference. The 70D has weather sealing, top LCD and more complicated AF for tracking moving objects too, again might not be a big deal for you. The max shutter speed of 1/4000 might be a bit limiting if plan to use wide prime lenses in bright sunlight, 70D improves that to 1/8000th of a second.

I find the 70D nicer to grip and use over the smaller xxxD range. Best to go to a store and try, I always found Nikon's a bit unintuitive and awkward but other people love them.

Assume you mean a D7100 or D7200 and not the D7000 as thats quite old now. Both of those are very good for the money. I moved from Canon to Nikon as I just preferred them but I'll try not to be biased :) I agree with above though regarding the 70D I'd go for that over the 760D any day.

Best advice is to go into a camera store and try both as you have to use it.

I was originally looking at the 70D but it did seem a little overkill considering the price but I imagine it would be fairly future proof considering I'm not exactly a professional!

What is the lifespan of these cameras in terms of eol and their successor? The 70D has been out since 2013 now so is the 80D on the horizon? I'm thinking more of price drops for the 70D rather than shelling out on the 80D...

e: Sounds like it might be announced in Feb

If starting from scratch, and only interested in stills (and not video) I would go for a Nikon D7100/7200 over the 70D (which I own)... as it does have the better sensor, and will produce better results if pushing the limits (true across the whole Nikon DSLR range)... or you're a bad photographer and can't meter properly :p .... If you have any interest in video then the 70D is a great piece of kit, and produces stunning results.

The fact is, they will all produce great photos in the right hands... Get to a shop and handle them, and choose what feels right in your hands. And I would not wait for new models to push the price down if you want a camera now.

Have you considered mirrorless systems? Take a look at the Fujifilm X-T1 and X-T10. The cameras are brilliant and Fuji also make some stellar lenses.
