Thinking of getting the Giant Xtc 4 2009 (Hardtail MTB) - Any comments/suggestions?

I've got a 2008 XTC 4.5 which is the same spec wise except for it has an LX rear mech. Top bike, very composed ride and built well. £600 sounds a lot though, the 08 model had a RRP of £499.99.

£600, great budget. you can get a lot of bikes for that money.
the internet has the 4 at a much cheaper price

for £600 you could get the 2.5 which is a good bike, has a good spec and a pretty good fork for the money.

lots of kona's in your price range as well.

kula

or for a lower budget but still a good spec list you have the cindercone

pretty good bike for the money.

out of all the above i would either have the giant 2.5, or the kona kula.
If you have sat on the gient and you like the way it rides then go for the 2.5
or if you prefere the lower spec 4, get that, but buy it online to save a wad of cash :)

Cheers for the comments; The RRP of the Xtc 4 2009 is £600, although i've spotted a couple of places selling it for £450. My budget is still £600 though so that Xtc 2.5 is very tempting, I liked the way the 4 rides and the general look of the frame.

why do you need heavy suspension for road and footpath use? it's dead weight on the road, and won't make all that much difference on a footpath. You'd be better off on a lighter hybrid with semi-slicks and no pointless disc brakes.

"and at weekends going off to the lakes etc."

I'm also looking into doing a few weekends away in deepest darkest Wales. I was just stressing that i'll be using it for day to day trudging, as well as everything else.

"going off to the lakes" is massively vague. I think that you'll find lots of roads around lakes.

In which case by all means go for something with suspension, but if I were you I'd buy another set of wheels/tyres for road use, so that you are making one fewer sacrifice on your daily trudge.

Aye fair enough, I meant the lakes as in the Lake District, although maybe it's not commonly known as "the lakes" other than around here!

I agree and almost looked at getting a hybrid as well but I really can't justify the cost, considering it's only a 10-15 minute cycle ride each way.

a 1kg difference in weight isnt exactly going to kill you, and pointless disc brakes? hardly pointless!

The xtc 2.5 is a great bike. If you like the 4, i would definatly consider the 2.5 if i had the cash.

Genesis Core 20 is a good bike. It's been getting really good reviews from users at BikeRadar and the forks are much better than the Giant XTC4.

It's whether you like the colour or not, it certainly stands out! :)

Decathlon RockRider 8.1 looks decent for £500.

Seems like a really good bike for the money.

you can get the XTC 3 2009 if you shop around for £550 :) I have had mine for 3 weeks now and its immense. Best bike I have had so far. XT rear mech and Tora front shocks with 100mm of travel with hydrolic disc's front & back.
