Thinking of going 4K...

With the Asus PB287Q going on sale today I am seriously considering picking one up. I haven't done much research on 4K gaming nor do I have a lot of time to do so. I do not know if my current set up would be up to the task.

I am currently running a 2500K @ 4.5Ghz and a single R9 290X 4GB.

I was thinking of maybe adding in an extra R9 290X if needed. I'm thinking of going for the 8GB VRAM model if needed. However I do not know if you can run different VRAM cards in crossfire. Going for an extra GPU would require a new PSU as well (I am currently using a Corsair Builder Series CX 600W PSU) as I don't think 600W would be enough. It would be nice to get a modular power supply too.

Basically it all comes down to this, is my 2500K @ 4.5Ghz/R9 290X 4GB good enough for 4K gaming or do I need to upgrade my CPU/GPU?

Only 4GB will be usable with an 8GB and a 4GB in Xfire. But they would run together.

You could buy the 4k monitor and an 8GB card, sell the 4GB 290x and buy another 8GB one to go with it.

While waiting for the 290x to sell you could run them both in Xfire in the meantime.

TBH on a 28" 4k monitor gaming at 4k looks the same as 1080 on ultra (depending upon the game ie tombraider 4k texture packs needed?).
On a 28" monitor running at 1440 is the sweet spot.

The extra desktop real estate is a win win.

So buy one, check your games at different resolutions and if you can notice a difference in IQ at 4k the think about upgrading your gpu setup.

Instead of buying an 8GB card, selling my 4GB card, and then buying another 8GB card, wouldn't it make more sense to just buy a R9 295x2 and sell my 4GB card?
