Hi there,

I am thinking of going linux for a new machine build I am doing. The only problem is that I need to do Windows Programming in Visual Studios.NET.

Is there anyway around this, like maybe being able to use like a virtual PC or something within linux? So I don't have to post the same question in the MAC section - if I did get a MAC and used the OSX (or whatever MAC OS is), would I be able to set up like a virtual pc..etc...

Thanks.

i dont know whether youll be able to do virtual machines on a mac as some hardware on macs do quite differ, what kind of work do you do in visual studio.net if its stuff like c# and c++ linux typically comes with the compliers depending on which distro you use

If you get a new (intel) mac then you can use VMWare Fusion, otherwise you're limited to VirtualPC for Windows and PPC linux distros.

Well I do VB.NET & C#.NET.

I know about things like mono for linux, but I would prefer if I could do it in Visual Studios and using .NET rather than the linux alternative.

I am thinking about getting an apple laptop. The ones with the Core 2 Duo's in them - I assume thats what you mean by intel.

EDIT: Does that mean I can use MAC OS on a PC then?

You cannot legally run the Mac OS on a generic PC. It would be easy as cake to run Linux with Windows in a virtual machine. Newer processors have VT, hardware to accelerate visualization which would mean near-native speeds.

I use Visual Studio .NET regularly in a Windows XP virtual machine in VMWare 6 and it works perfectly, the only think you cant really do in a VM is 3D Acceleration.

Also if you want a free alternative to VMWare, VirtualBox is brilliant and seems almost faster than VMWare.

Cool - thats what I wanted to hear.

I am using VirtualBox within windows at the moment messing around with linux on it.

I have a 17" TFT with the standard resolution of 1280*1024 and was wondering if I can run it at the max resolution because at the moment the maximum i can get is 1024*768 and I was wondering if i can run it at the resolution which is between the two like 1152*864 or something like that?

Thanks.
