Thinking of going X79

Morning Stu,

Yeah I'd looked at that bench and also the 3770k vs 3930k and whilst I do enjoy a good over clock and bench session I always run at stock for gaming and just recently I've been spending more and more time video and picture editing. Not that my 3770k has ever faultered though... Upgrade itch I quess :D

I'd be looking at 2nd hand but then I suppose a 5820 setup could be had for similar cash... I do like the prospect of xfire 390's which makes the 3/4930k the better chip...

Is the 3930k just too old now though?

3930K still delivers a good punch and they can also be overclocked very easily again to just make them stronger.

Plus you can use cheaper DDR3 vs DD4 of X99.

When you sau Xfire 390s, do you mean 2-way and not more? which your current CPU, 3930K/4930K and 5820K will all do perfectly well.

Why are you talking me out of it :p

Yeah OK so not a lot is to be gained, both will have good legs well into next year and will support any future GPU upgrades.

I guess ultimately it'll come down to the cost of what x79 platforms are still fetching...

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte X99M Gaming 5 - Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***£20 Saving*** £475.98
1 x TeamGroup Elite 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (TPKD416GM2400HC16QC01) £129.95
Total : £615.53 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Thats the cheapest X99 setup you can buy from here (need to add cooling).

But you are aware of newer intel CPUs and chipsets to replace the current Z97+Haswell/DC CPUs coming this year, but I dont think they will add any more cores.

So if I can bag an x79 bundle around the £500 I reckon that's a worth while upgrade and maybe sell on the 3770k/z68XP-UD4/16Gb at £250ish...

Thanks for your input Stu :)

Yeah the way Sandy/Ivy/Has/DC has gone I'm not banking on miracles in that department ;)

Doubt it will even be £500 going by some of the CPU+board prices in the MM.

If your 16GB of RAM is on 4 sticks then you can also keep that to make full use of the quad channel memory controllers.

Just gone back to X79 myself. Sold of my Z97 Asus M7F and 4790k, just picked up an X79 RIVE and a 4930K and still got change.
If you can pick up a mobo and chip at a good price, then go for it. You can always re-use your ram.
Only went Z97 because OCUK could'nt source me a replacement RIVE.
