But what?

I work as a software developer and tend to get involved in a lot of different technologies - scripting, Java, C++, DBs...

Looking to learn something new, useful and interesting just for fun over the next year? That's a long time so something difficult or complicated is fine, would be good to have a project or something to show for it at the end as well.

Anyone do anything similar? Or have any ideas I could learn?

iOS - from scratch
Azure - further
HTML5/CSS3 & jQuery - further
WinRT
Facebook graph API

refresh my 6+ years of C++

I'm doing all this through a personal project that was my wife's idea, and which has taught me Android and ASP.Net Web API and EF 5.0 through 2012 - its all coming together and has fantastic scope for future development with some good earning potential

You just need an idea

No love for Clojure?

Worth adding to the suggestions, but I didn't really get on with it - other people are different, so I'd say take a look.

One pointed comment (a gentle bitch I think) from the scala guys at this years' skills matter conference is that scala can compile itself, but no-one's yet written a clojure compiler in clojure ;)

I'd recommend "Seven languages in seven weeks" as a good read.

I'm definitely going to get this book and work through some of it, seems really interesting having had a quick look at it. Thanks for the recommendation.

I now also have a project to do a friends website - he is a wedding photographer. So will give me a good chance to get all those skills up to a decent, up to date standard!
