Thinking of moving from a 680 to a 7970

Hey, All this Titan talk has giving me the bug and I feel like I need a change.

Currently I am rocking the 680 GTX and it's been a good card, no real complaints just a few things that are sort of annoying. I had the stutter bug but it wasn't a biggie because I didn't use vsync that often. The biggest problem is switching between my monitor and my TV. It doesn't handle it so well. My 6950's never caused any issues, but for some reason the 680 just keeps losing hmdi sync with my receiver and I have to restart the computer for it to work again.

Another reason for thinking of changing is that I have the Samsung SA700D 3D monitor and while I got it working with Nvidia 3D I was never happy with it.

Will I miss physx? I don't know. That's about the only reason I can think of for staying with the 680.

A few of the bundles interest me as well for the AMD cards. These are games that I would buy, so its a pretty good deal. I was thinking of this

or

Or would something like this be fine

Or just keep my 680. :)

Crikey if you think 3D with Nvidia is bad then you're in for a shock.

I would keep the 680 and SLI it if you can. A 7970 is faster but by so little you would never see the difference.

It's either switch or nothing, I will be selling the 680 if I buy the 7970.

And, I have a monitor that doesn't work with Nvidia's 3D, the workaround isn't that great. The 3D looks way better on my brothers computer and he has the same monitor but an AMD card.

Those Sammys do get a good rating with AMD cards and the Nvidia workaround is reportedly poor (as you know). In your circumstance, sell the 680 and grab a couple of 7950's? They will outlast a single 680.

Thanks for the input guys. 3D is not a major factor in my decision, it's just a plus point in for switching, losing physx is a negative point :-)

I won't be going two card no matter what happens.

Now just have to make the choice, stay or go!!

Thanks again guys.

Stay, pointless side grade at best while losing physX.

The sammy monitor is the same tech that's in lightboost btw in case it's a glasses thing.

manju is using the monitor on Nvidia 3D, said the hack was still working last I heard(you just needed to switch the monitor off and back on to get out of 3D using the hack) and he linked me this page when I thought about going green.

@Andy, you were the one that recommended going 3D bud plus you made a review thread on how good AMD3D worked on your LG.

What changed?

I enjoy Tridef 3D myself, it's not perfect, but I notice 3D fixes in Nvidia driver release notes for titles so it works both ways-ie always getting tweaked by both parties.

I'm not insinuating any is better than the other, they both have their caveats, all you need to do is find good unbiased(non fanboi:eek:) dedicated 3D sites to find this out.

Besides 3D is free with the sammy nothing can touch that for value.
:D

Having that same monitor is what swayed me to the red team, but I now play Planetside 2 and miss the Physx that I could have had with Nvidia and don't really use the 3D that I chose the 7950 for!

Keep the 680 till the 8 series are released. Yes you won't get as much for it but atm it's a pretty pointless sidegrade unless you get a good clocking 7970. I was in the same predicament as you a week or so back.

I used that method for ages, you can check the Samsung 700D thread on here. I was helping other people to get it working.

It's just I was never happy with how it looked especially after seeing what 3D looked like with an AMD card on this monitor.

But might give it a try again if I decide to keep the 680 :-)

Shh, that won't go down well at all, the general consensus is AMD+3D isn't meant to be good.:p

Seriously though, as you have noticed, Tridef isn't to be dismissed, it's pretty good on the whole-not without it's faults but what doesn't?

Have you tried Tridef with your 680?

It's Tridef that's making the 3D work on AMD, although it's only output through SBS on Nvidia(Nvidia won't allow FS output on Tridef), the effect is more or less the same.

At the end of the day, prices the way they are, it would probably be a straight swap or not much outlay involved due to current pricing.

Out of curiosity, what was it you didn't like, was it actual Nvidia 3D or the hassle of the workaround to get it working on your 680?

I'm curious to know regarding future purchase choice as I like to keep my options open.

:)

I can tell you that this isn't a problem on the 7970, BUT they did introduce an odd HDMI sound clicking bug into the drivers last year. It only does it at low idle clocks so I have mine set to 500Mhz and it's all fine. Not a problem for a water cooled GPU, but may be an issue for an air cooled one. Depends how obsessed you are about idle clocks/temps etc. AFAIK they still haven't fixed it.

Well barely anything uses PhysX, and now it looks like PhysX won't be around for much longer at all with the consoles using AMD GPUs, they are definitely not going to be using any PhysX as nVidia are too bigheaded to accept that and open it up either at all, or without gimping it on AMD to make nVidia hardware look better.

Realistically, the best choice if you are happy to spend out a bit more, would be to sell the 680 and get 2x 7950s as has been suggested, sale of the 680 would fund the majority of the cost to swap anyway, and you'd get significantly more performance.

It's funny isn't it? Most people who talk smack about AMD do so whilst openly admitting that they haven't got an AMD card in their computer, and some even say they've never used one, apparently, due to "all the problems" that they apparently have.
