Hi all,

I was hoping to get any first hand accounts of how good or bad Bulldog is as an ADSL provider. Basically BT have been messing me about for a year now stating that they will be upgrading and therefore I would be getting upgraded to 2mb from my current 512k at no extra cost. Now if this had come through I would have had no problems at all and would have stuck with BT. However I have been since told (incorrectly or not) by BT that the exchange was upgraded but due to distance I will be stuck on my 512.

Bulldog however have upgraded properly and apparently I would be able to utilise the 8mb package from them (16mb unavailable due to distance). having checked up it would be no extra cost to swap everything over in terms of yearly spend, my only concern is that Bulldog from what I have seen havent exactly recieved the best of reviews, and this is my call for help.

Any experience of Bulldog? would they be worth it for the extra speed that I want/need or would I be better off sticking with what I have?

was it not bulldog that pulled out of the residential retail adsl market recently? I might have that wrong..?

according to their website (if up to date) I can still order, maybe they just arent actively seeking new customers right now through advertising.

I'm with bulldog. No problems at all(touch wood). I get 8mb all the time no problems, evening during peak times and very good pings. Voicemail is slightly dodgy though!

My mate signed up to Bulldog over a month ago now, and they still aint sorted his e-mail account yet, so he aint got one, hes well ****** off as hes been wanting to register here etc... but hes only got a Gmail account, and these guys dont accept em.

If you can't get >512kbps, it's extremely unlikely that you'll get anywhere near 8Mbps, but without stats (attenuation, SNR margin, current sync rate) it's impossible to comment for certain.

gives the stats for my exchange, BT are adamant that they cant give a higher speed, I believe that Bulldog have implemented better technology on the exchange than BT have and therefore can offer a better speed. It is certainly something I will be querying with BT if Bulldog doesnt get completely flamed here.

I shall try and get some stats when I get back from work

I read a similar report that they had no penetrated the ADSL market sufficiently and as a consequence decided to sell off their current customers to the highest bidder. They say that they hope to have a purchaser within the month.

With that air of uncertainty surrounding the company I would be very wary indeed.

But not your line, which is more important.

indeed so :)

Not true.

interesting point, if they are all going through the same hardware then how could Bulldog make the claim for 8mb when I did the home line check?

I am cynical enough of business practices though, so it may well be that the Bulldog claim is utter crap.

They aren't going through the same hardware - but Bulldog's isn't necessarily better (and they haven't "implemented better technology" if they've refused you ADSL2+).
It's up to 8Mbps too.

You're not going to get better than BT ADSL Max if you go for the Bulldog ADSL "up to 8mb" option.

Bulldog was on watchdog about 6 months ago because of its poor customer service and service,if i remember rightly they were investigated over the problems they were causing for a lot of there customers. My mate has Nildram and there pings are superb and you can get up to 8mb with them as well ;) must be worth a looky.

Thanks all, pretty much confirms my thoughts on Bulldog and the reviews I have seen. I shall look elsewhere for a company that will actually speak to me and therefore answer my questions.

Cheers

If you can't get more than 512kbps from BT due to the length and quality of your line, you won't get any better from another company such as Bulldog. All LLU providors such as Bulldog do is place their own equipment in BT exchanges in order to bypass BT's network; you are still getting the service through the same copper cables as with BT. No matter what Bulldog do at the exchange, it won't change the fact that the copper cable running from the exchange to your house isn't able to handle more than 512kbps.
