Not to keen on the reports that ivy cpu`s run hot when overclocked so im looking to get a X79 set up to take advantage of pcie 3 and so on so a few questions.

I have some Corsair Vengeance Arctic White 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit,should i buy another set or sell these on and buy a
Quad Channel Kit ?

What are the cpu`s like running overclocked do they put out a lot of heat,i was running a 2600k @ 4.5ghz on my sb build on air.

Thinking of fitting a Corsair H80 to cool the cpu?

Thats it for now :)

Just buy another set, it will be fine in Quad-Channel.

As for temperatures, my i7-3820 running at 5GHz runs at 100% load at around 60ºc, and idles around 30ºc on my relatively simple watercooling loop (EK Supreme HF block, EK DCP 4.0 pump, and EK CoolStream XTX 360 radiator).

I'd not expect great headroom for overclocking on a standard H80, if you change the fans to something a little more performance oriented in push/pull, you'll gain a bit more room, but they are only as good (if not slightly worse) than high-end air. If you can budget for custom watercooling then that is your best bet :)

I have four of sets of those running on my P9X79 Pro; as paradigm said they work fine in quad channel.

I have a Noctua NH-D14 cooling my i7-3960x. When I was experimenting with overclocking I saw temperatures top out at about 70C at full load at 4.75GHz - keep in mind that this is with 2 more cores than paradigm's i7-3820 and it's actually not too bad. Certainly cooler than my QX6700 ran at 3.4GHz! Apparently the NH-D14 is on par with a Corsair H100, so you should be able to use that as a rough guide to overclocking potential.

I have 2 1850 typhoons to go on the H80 if need be x79 looks to be what i want then will do a bit more reading.

Saundie i have the NH-D14 cooler as well how did you get it to fit on the board as ive seen the x79 has a different cooler mounting`s from other boards.

Personal experience only but the H100 is miles better than the Noctua NH-D14 cooler on my sandybridge i5 2500k. In push-pull with high flow fans I'm able to get around 4-5 C lower under 100% load with the H100 compared to the Noctua. Don't know much about the H80.

Noctua sent me a socket 2011 mounting kit free of charge, I just had to upload a screenshot of my receipt and wait a week for them to ship it over. You can also buy one separately if you want - it's called a "NM-I2011 mounting kit".

I've not got any personal experience with the Corsair coolers, so my statement was based upon what I've read online. The H100 does cost more than the NH-D14, which is something to keep in mind when comparing them.

Nice one ill give them a email.

Cant fit the H100 in my case in sig H80 will fit on the top 120mm.

I've no experience with the case you have in person, but if it has nowhere that a 240 or 360 rad could mount, does it have enough airflow?

The reason I ask is that the VRMs on the X79 boards get particularly warm, and if you don't have enough case airflow (or even focussed airflow around the VRMs), then you will severely hamper your overclockability.

Perhaps a new case is in order.

The case has plenty of airflow it has 3 180mm fans on the bottom of the case pushing air up to the top 120mm it was the main reason i bought this case:)

Nah i can fit a 120.2 rad down there as the case came with brackets but i dont want to lose the 3 180mm s the filters on them have stopped so much dust out, corsair H80 will do me plus ive also asked Noctua for the 2011 fitting kit for my DH-14 :)

Yup found it its called "Magicool Extreme Triple 180mm x 35mm Slim Radiator (MC-RADI180X3)" Looks like this when installed, rig is by a guy called lvl8Hacker

Yeh seen them dont want to go mad on the watercooling been there done that sort of thing.

X79 ordered will be here tomorrow.

Corsair H80 Water-Cooling CPU Cooler
Asus Sabertooth Intel X79 Socket 2011 DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard
3820 3.60GHz
ASUS Xonar DG 5.1 PCI Soundcard

Not bothered to buy another 8gb ram kit as i think i`ll get a quad kit and sell on the Corsair Arctic White 8GB 12800C9 got a question will i be able to run this 8gb kit and if so what memory slots do i use.

Thanks.
