Thinking Of Picking Up A 125?

Basically I'm thinking of getting a small bike (probably a 125), that I can ride on a CBT, assuming this can be done? For a few months before I turn 21 and do a direct access course and get a larger bike. Is this possible?

If so what would you guys recommend for a bike, something cheap preferably that won't be too hard to sell on once I turn 21 (September) and get the money together for something larger. Really I'm just looking for any advice you can give me, as this will be my first time with a bike on the road.

Thanks! :)

Gonna go for the 'obvious' choice here of a Honda CG125, quite boring but it won't break and it will sell easily when the time comes to get a proper bike :p

The're also not quite as boring as they appear at first, rode one a bit a few years ago after I was comfortable on a bigger bike and you can fling them around quite a bit, a lot lighter than a proper bike and it almost becomes fun :)

Aye, any Japanese 125 will see you right for the summer and you'll likely get your money back at the end. I learned on a CG125 and they're perfectly serviceable little machines.

Have a look at the Varadero's, V twin Honda bulletproof and silky smooth

I had one and it often got mistaken for a 600 as it's so big, they hold their value very well so you should have no problem in selling it, I sold mine in 4 hours on Ebay.

If you're handy with a set of spanners then you could go for the quickest of the 125's, like an RS125 or Cagiva Mito but they're 2stroke and will need a lot of TLC. If you want something more reliable and less work, albeit a tad slower, then something like a CBR125 or YZF-R125 ... I mean, they're all sportsbikes orientated, but stay away from cheap chinese crap or you'll forever be on the peasant wagon

Have a gander over at http://www.125ccsportsbikes.com plenty of decent info there

Ignore this advice, I wouldn't get a 2 stroke, and why would he shell out more for a sports 125, when a basic 125 will do him, he's only keeping it for a few months.

Yes I've got a YZF-R125, but mines nearly 2 years old, and I'll probabley be keeping it for a few more years to come, but if I was getting a bike for a few months there no way I would have forked out £3000 for it.

Depends if you restrict them or not, but if they are restricted it kind of defeats the point in having one. Wouldn't particularly want to do the CBT on the RS anyway, when I went on my brothers I found it a nightmare to do any of the slow speed stuff. I'd stick to the 4 strokes, CBR125, CG125, YBR125 etc. Quite a lot of choice.

I did the same thing, a few months away from 21 and got a 125. Looking back I would have just wait it out, and gone straight to the DAS. Obviously being on the road on a bike for a bit won't do you any harm in regards to experience, but you'll definitely find the bigger bikes easier to ride funnily enough.

I had a Suzuki Van Van (RV125) before my DAS. Was a great bike to learn on and to commute to and from work. Looked kind of cool too!

I didn't do my test on it though! Just used the hire bikes.
