Im thinking of replacing my main pc and selling the currant one (which is in my sig)

I'm thinking of maybe going for intel this time, seeing as AMD is not improving much other then add more cores and higher clock.

I'm not looking for something top of the range, ( i7, gtx 780) or anything like that,

im not 100% if I need upgrade yet, If I do go ahead with a new build would I see much improvement from a intel chip over my AMD FX ?

Budget wise i would like to keep it reasonable.

Tell us of your needs for the new machine. What do you want to do with it? What software does it need to run? Does it need to be quiet, small, or anything else in particular?

Looking at the CPU Benchmark site, your AMD FX-8320 scores 8K, which is still right up there. The i7-4770K scores 10K - only 25% faster - and the i5-4670 actually scores less (7785). If you're willing to spend £425.99, you could go for an i7-4930K.

Really, I'd look elsewhere for bottlenecks, and what stands out is your GPU. If you're not getting performance in games you should upgrade the GPU, not the CPU. Consider a GTX 770.

its just the general use which is sluggish, i've re installed windows,

It needs to be a full size case quite is not a issue.

I use the PCs for everything, gaming, video and music editing ( sometimes), burning music and movies, image editing, watching hd movies, listening to music, general use office, web browsing.

Okay, fire up Task Manager and look at your CPU and RAM usage. If you're using over 8 GB - and given that you're editing videos you probably are - then get some more RAM. If one core of the CPU is maxxed then look for an errant process - typically Flash or an AV software.

Seems a bit strange you're finding general usage sluggish, as said this could possibly be a RAM issue I don't see it as being a result of the CPU.

If general use is sluggish on an SSD that is set up properly with that system then something is installed that is causing the problem or something is configured in an odd way. That hardware is more than capable & going Intel won't solve it I'm afraid.

Try swapping to another anti-virus or something? Or is there something in particular that is slow in which case perhaps there are config changes for that particular area.

Edit: Are all the drives on SATA? I've found running an old drive that wasn't on SATA caused my computer to run noticeably slower though I've no idea why. Given the capacities I'm assuming this isn't the issue for you.

I think i could do with replacing my card if I can sell my 660 and I do want a new case.
