Is it possible to actually think of nothing?

Some people I know , including my Mrs, claim they regularly think of nothing which makes them relax and ultimately sleep better or are they just confusing this with being lost in thought which isn't the same?

Many people read books, listen to music etc which distracts them from their daily routine helping them relax and promoting better sleep.

The reason I ask is that i can't comprehend not thinking. It's like breathing, it's involuntary but what's intriguing is that how some people can just switch off and others can't?

Thoughts on this matter?

I don't know. But my dad swears saying 'the' repeatedly in his head makes him go to sleep. He saw it on BBC breakfast, apparently it stops you thinking about things.

You can't think of "nothing" unless you're are dead.

If you think you are thinking of nothing, you are actually thinking that you're thinking of nothing (or something like that , lol)

smash a load of something like Thorazine and it gets pretty silent.

not pleasant mind as without that subconscious train of thought that fills your head you've got to do it or the silence gets horrible.

Even 700mg of anti-psychotics aren't enough to make me think of nothing. I think when people say they're thinking about nothing what they're really doing is thinking of nothing of importance. Whereas when you're manic you attach significance to even the smallest of things. And your brain has a tendency to bounce off the wall when it comes to your thought process.

Think about film > film features a murder scene > I wonder if I could kill someone > what would I do with a dead body > could I peel their skin off > could you cook the skin > mmmmm pork scratchings > time for a cup of tea.

I have a mental trick I use if my brain starts going round and round on something that happened that day or is happening the next. It works as it calms me and allows me to sleep without thinking about too much.

Very hard to explain but is close to thinking about nothing.

A different trick I read about in a hypnosis book many years ago that I have had some success with is to picture yourself in bed from the ceiling and visualise sinking towards/into yourself over and over.

I think it is possible to think of nothing and blank your mind out. If you totally relax you can do it.

I suppose it just depends on the person and how active there brain is at the time.

Have you garnered that from the following conversation?

Huddy: "What you thinking about?"
Huddy's O/H: "nothing"

She's clearly thinking about filth or something uber weird that she thinks would make you judge her. :p

If I get that response I dig deeper and annoy the Mrs until she tells me. :D

Sleep is a very bizarre thing - sometimes it makes me feel quite uncomfortable. Being effectively dead to the world is a source of some anxiety!

Personally its not possible but the people on TOWIE manage it.

Also on big brother, you know when the sound cuts out and you hear noises from outside? Thats a live big brother contestant thoughts feed.

How can you think of nothing? those who try to think of nothing, what are you thinking about? is it the word nothing you picture? in which case you are thinking of the word nothing which is something, only the dead can think of nothing because there is nothing to think with.
Think about it lol!!!

I've been thinking of this recently. I go to bed and start thinking of all sorts of things, feel like I'm never going to fall to asleep.
So I try and think of nothing, clearly that doesn't work and it takes me an hour to get to sleep!

You try and think of nothing but the Stay Puff marshmallow man pops into your head to ruin your day.

I do it occasionally, tend to stare at a point far away until thoughts stop.

It's kinda weird when you come out of it, I want to say it's like waking up but it's not at all like that! :D
