Thinking of upgrade, Advice pls.

Hello hoping i could get some advice on upgrading my PC.
I'm looking to get back into PC gaming and hoping a new graphics card and more ram will do it.
Is my processor up to it?

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30Ghz
Motherboard MSI MS-7681

Will this with a decent graphics card and 8-16 gig or ram be any good?
or will i really have to start from scratch?

Yes, start off with a new GPU and 8GB RAM. What PSU do you have, and what GPU do you have in mind?

My PSU is Corsair CX600M
Was thinking of something like AMD R9 290 series GPU.
Any good?

It should be ok for a 290. Will also run a 780 or the newer 970 (the latter more easily, and would be what I'd go for if budget allows).

Here are two options.

The GTX 970 and the GTX 780. The 970 is better performance with newer software ect.. but the 780 is a stunning price and will be great value for money, it isn't too far behind the 970.

would you say the 970 is worth the extra money over the 780?
and is the 970 linked the best one to buy if you were to spend up to about £300?
I take it the ram linked there is the best bang for the buck also?
