Hi all as the title says I'm thinking in the very near future of upgrading my cpu but i'm not sure what my mobo will take.
I have a Asrock Z170 Pro 4s motherboard and a :-

6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700K
Processor Base Frequency: 4GHz
Overclocked to 4.4GHz
Cache: 8MB SmartCache
I would Ideally like an i9 but don't want to spend any more that £500, would I be better going for an i7 instead?
and would I see much difference in performance?

Thanks,
Danny.

If you are just aiming at an i9 9900K level of performance that is cheaper, then wait for the next generation of Ryzen. Uses less power, too. It will be out around June this year.

What do you use you PC for mainly that makes you feel a new CPU will benefit? The fastest CPU that your current board supports is the i7-7700k which is barely an upgrade on what you have now. You can't drop an i9 into your current system so you would have to buy CPU and motherboard and that would be more than your £500 budget.

You have not mentioned what GPU you have or how much RAM you have. If gaming what resolution do you use?

Thanks Orange Nexus for your reply, I'm a bit concerned will my motherboard support a i9, it says it supports socket 1151 and on the processor it says that its compatible with LGA 1151 socket also it says that its compatible with 300-series my mobo is intel Z170 series?

Thanks Finners for that info here is my spec :-

Intel Core i7-6700K 4GHz,
32GB RAM,
3TB HDD,
250GB SSD,
NVIDIA GTX 1080,
Windows 10 Home 64bit

its a few years old now but I got it mainly for my Oculus rift, which I use everyday for gaming.
I do have an LG Flatron 34UM95-P 34" WideScreen Super-Wide LED Monitor running @ 3440 x 1440
What would you advise as an upgrade?

I'm really not clued up on VR but a quick Google seems that you would be aiming for 90FPS at quite a high resolution. I can't find an exact resolution figure, you'll probably know more than me.

I would have thought the 6700k you have would be good for 90FPS so I'd be looking to upgrade the GPU.

However the GPU market is terrible ATM for getting value for your money.

Best to download a program like MSI afterburner and run it whilst you are gaming in VR. If you GPU usgae is pretty much stuck at 99% then that is your bottleneck and needs upgrading to get better FPS

Thanks again Finners, I will look into your suggestions and I'll download MSI Afterburner and see how I get on, Thanks m8.

But that's a fairly recent CPU, you can still buy that CPU at the Overckers store. If your computer is running slow then there's a fault somewhere that a faster CPU wont fix. Is your framerate too low?

oops your system is identical to mine and I use mine for VR to, I would wait for Ryzen 2 like others have said. I don't find my PC struggling with any games I play in VR or none VR and You probably have the upgrade itch like me. I've had my CPU well over 3 years now and by the time Ryzen 2 comes out, it will be nearly 4 years old

But basically I'm waiting for Ryzen 2 and will upgrade my PC in August.

I think I would just buy a bigger SSD now, a M.2 drive if your MB can take one.

Wait for next version of Ryzen (3xxx series) , watch reviews and recommendations on here.... then decide. 'thinking about in near future' sounds like you can wait.

as mentioned above, without question wait for the Ryzen 3000. Even a mid tier level chip (i.e 3600/3600x) is pretty much above the levels of performance of intels current flagship.

Sorry Guys, I haven't been on the forums for a week so I never noticed all the replies, thanks everyone, I guess I'll wait for the Ryzen 3000, the reason why I was thinking about upgrading was because I play a lot of sims games ie. acc/ac/rf2/r3e etc in Vr and I don't feel that Im getting near the 90fps everyone keeps talking about, I think I'm getting around the 45fps now I'm certainly not an expert when it comes to getting the best out of my hardware, I kinda just stick the headset on and go :) so any advice would be greatly received :)

That's almost certainly due to your graphics card, though I find that hard to believe with a GTX 1080. Try dropping the settings. And try recording the CPU performance when you play.

BTW if you're not puking, you're likely getting near 90 fps.
