thinking of upgrading in new year, which is best for my needs?

I'm thinking of maybe upgrading to a i5 in the new year but not sure which to get? I will not be over clocking it as my board dosnt allow it...but... I'm still thinking of maybe getting this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...ocket-lga1151-processor-retail-cp-579-in.html

as clock speed seems faster than my other choice which is this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...ocket-lga1151-processor-retail-cp-585-in.html

all I want is something I can upgrade to while keeping my same psu etc and also something which will run good with either a 980ti or gtx 1070 as I will eventually also be upgrading my gpu at some point.

if I'm not over clocking will my second choice be good enough? or am I still better off getting the unlocked version?

For £17 difference get the K.

Tbh though they're both pretty expensive. If you're doing the GPU upgrade do that first then reassess the CPU requirement later would be my advice. At that point it might be better value to switch platform.

thanks for reply, I will be able to afford the cpu before I will be able to afford the gpu so that's why I'm planning on upgrading my cpu first, will the 6600k handle a 980ti or gtx 1070 ok? as I'm deffo going with one of those 2 cards in the future

also do you think I will be ok with the same psu after I upgrade? as I havnt had this psu long

You might find the new Kabylake chips worth a look seeing as your not buying till the new year, the increase in stock speeds could be useful, depending on if they work in your board of course.

thanks for reply, yes I will defo consider one if they turn out to be good and use the same socket as the skylake chips but if not I will defo be getting one of the skylake cpus as I wont have the cash to upgrade board again on top of cpu

Kabylake is definately the same socket as Skylake as the current boards will be getting bios updates to work with them. If you get one make sure you update the bios on your current board before installing it. The new 200 series chipset is coming along with it as well.

If the rumours are to be believed we may also see AMD's Zen and it's new AM4 socket released in mid January although nobody will know how good (or bad) it is until it's released and reviewed.
