Hi

I'm thinking of upgrading part of my current system to keep up with the curve - any suggestions on where to start?

I mainly use the m/c for gaming. I don't want to upgrade the whole lot, but I'm looking for the next part to replace, then the next, etc.

Current spec:

* Intel Core2Duo E6600 "Conroe" @ 2.4GHz (1066 FS)
* Asus P5W64-WS Pro Intel 975X (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
* GeIL 4GB (4x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel
* Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
* Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Sound Card
* Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16Mb Cache
* Maxtor 6B300S0 300GB 7200RPM SATA 16Mb Cache
* Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
* Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler Fan
* Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS II Aluminium Midi-Tower Case (Black)
* 2x Noctua NF-S12 800RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan

Thanks

First I'd replace the CPU with a quad. Next I'd swap the graphics for nVidia's GTX-successor.

Both seem a bit OTT though since that's still a high-spec rig.

Yeah - agreed, I'm not going to gain much at the moment. I'm planning to get something over the Xmas break. At the moment I'm wondering whether I should look to go for a Quad-Core, or make the switch to a DDR3 mobo & RAM.

Cheers

DDR3 is by no means worth it yet. Just check out some of the prices of DDR3 versus DDR2. It'll be at least a year in my estimation before DDR3 starts to make economic sense, just like DDR2 sucked when it first came out.

Intel's 45 nm CPUs will be out by January as should the new nVidias.

I dont think you'll gain an awful lot from a new component at the mo, your system is pretty top spec. What about a watercooling set up to allow you to overclock further, or a shiny new monitor... May aswell save your money for a quad core Penryn when its comes out
