Okay, my current system is:

AMD Opteron 165 Dual Core.
2GB DDR memory
Gigabyte K8NXP-SLi Motherboard
with a Nvida 6600, soon to be an 7800gt graphics card.

My questoin is this, I mainly use me pc for games and encoding DVD's and was wondering whether to get a nice Q6600 sytem or a E6850 system. Either would have the foloowing with it:

Gigabyte P35 Motherboard. the DDR2/DDR3 one.
4Gb DDR2 OCZ memory
and either a 8600GT or a 8800GTS graphics card.

Is it worth while upgrading to either or these chips now or to wait for the new penryns to arrive, and if it is is the quad better than the dual?

Oh and 1 final thing is there any difference between a normal Q6600 and the energy efficent ones? apart from the energy efficency.

Cheers

claimed (forum talk for i now own you)

graphics card should either be a 8800GT if you get now or a 8800GTS (the G92 version if you get later, depending upon the price)

currrent 8800GT is about 8800GTX performance by the way.

for encoding i say get a quad.

all Q6600 are now energy efficient (G0 stepping) unless where you buy it has some very old stock left over, the non enegy efficient Q6600 were B3 stepping.

but the question is... upgrade now, or wait till the spring when the new bits become available? Will there be much increase in performance/price if I wait?

there is never a good time to buy as there is always newer better stuff coming out

Spring is an awful long time to wait

The new Phenoms have just been released

If you can wait a few months for them to drop in price then look at buying one

You've only just upgraded the graphics card so that with the dual core CPU should keep you going

Q6600 is better than the Phenom
Only reason you'd wait is for the new Intel quads, but there has been talk of delays for them.
Q6600 is the way to go if you are looking to upgrade now.
