Thinkpad x100e - a worthy upgrade from a T42?

...or worthy replacement of at least. My trusty T42 Thinkpad is getting a little tired and long in the tooth, and I can't really justify spending a large amount something like the Thinkpad X500. The x100e has caught my eye, as PcPro rate it highly, and it seems pretty dinky.

Do you think I'd notice any sort of performance increase from the Athlon Neo MV-40 CPU over the Pentium M I have in my T42. The x100e would double the RAM of my (1Gb) T42 too, which would be nice, but I had no problems with the T42 running Windows 7 RC bar a few scarce driver issues and bodges. Anyone had a chance to play with them both?

the X100e is brand new and so isn't playable-with yet.

i think that if you're coming from a fully-fledged thinkpad like a T42 (i have a T41 :D) then you'll probably find the build quality of the X100e very disappointing, it's made out of plastic, rather than the magnesium-aluminium alloy like proper thinkpads.

if you're looking for a good replacement for your T42, i know of a very good ebay seller that sells ex-showroom ThinkPads for very good prices. (like a high-end T500 for ~£770)

i got my current laptop, a Thinkpad X200 from there and it's 100% perfect.

A good point Aod, something I hadnt considered - Ive not had my hands on any of the lower end thinkpads, only the Lenovo 'non-thinkpad' laptops of similar price. I shall have to have a look for ex-showroom - thanks for the tip mate!

:( I'm looking for a new laptop, I have a T43 bought in 2005. But the closest thing to it now is a HP EliteBook or something which costs £1100+

I would take Aod advise and go the ebay route. You can get T400's from £400 with warranty. Also if you don't need latest tech you can get nice T61's on there from £250 also with warranty.

I currently have a T60 and got that on ebay a few years ago for £250 with warranty when they were selling new for a lot lot more.

:D

Thinkpads truly are the best laptops in the world.

<Request to Mods> would it be alright if i linked to a couple of ebay stores that sell new / old thinkpads in the thread, or would it be a violation of the no-competitor rule... i mean, OcUK don't sell thinkpads but do sell laptops so i'm not sure.
