Third GTX1080 with buzzing/coil whine

This can't be normal, surely? they've all sounded a little different but each has a high pitched buzzed/screeching noise when playing games with high framerates.

My two MSI GTX980 cards which have served me well have no such issues.

I've tried two MSI cards and one from Gigabyte which was by far the worse.

Sometimes being a PC Gamer really does suck.

:(

Something the newer cards suffer with unfortunately. Both my cards have it but it does not bother me luckily as cant hear it over my headphones, fans etc. I dont know, quite like hearing them scream away.

Have you tried a spare PSU to ensure its nothing to do with that? I know a few on here have had whine caused by the PSU or from the PSU itself rather than the card.

I don't see why the PSU would whine with the single GTX 1080 but be fine with two GTX980 connected .

But no I have no another PSU to test, it's a Corsair RM1000.

Enough for tonight, I need a drink now as this is stressing me out. lol

no-one should accept coil whine that is audible over your case fans IMO

Just a suggestion to OP. In my sisters pc has a 970. Makes the PSU scream like mad. Tested my TXP in it and quiet as a mouse and that is a bigger TDP card.

Doesn't bother me one bit. Rather that than going through 10 cards to find two that are quiet. I've had coil whine on my 980's,Ti's,1080's. My TXP's so far were quiet in my other rig so hopefully they will remain so in my main WC'd one. Not that it would bother me personally anyway.

Something these new gen cards suffer with unfortunately. FE cards namely being the worst at the minute hense my suggestion to OP incase he hasn't tried a decent AIB card yet with alloy chokes.

Coil whine is annoying but can also be because of PSU. I've noticed that coil whine on my 1070 has died down slightly since I've owned it.

shouldn't be any reason why "new gen" cards suffer more from it - other than poor/cheap component choice - at a guess

especially considering lower power than previous generations

even my 480 and 570 had no coil whine, nor does my 290 that pulls near 300W

at the price of the current 1070/1080 I'd expect nothing audible coil whine noise - these are premium cards

Cheap components that is all. They build a great reputation with all half decent parts for years and then they decide **** it we will increase our profit margins from now on. Then you get the premium brands making more money than they should be by using the best whine/buzz resistant parts.

It's a shame. But what everyone says is "have you tried a different PSU?". The PSU I have is ofine a premium brand, granted it's not a 2k platinum rated beast but why would I need that with a 970 and an i5? EVGA 600+ gold or silver mine is.

Says silent or xx% quieter than last time. False adverts?

not sure cheap parts is a reason to be honest especially in the graphics cards. I've bought cards for many years and this issue is not a new one. I cant remember 100% for sure the cards where I've noticed it and never bothered returning them as just put it down to the way they work. I've not noticed the problem in recent years however and especially not since moving to a Seasonic PSU but have only used two cards since then.

690, 780 Ti, TItan X all been fine for me. Definitely goes back to as far back as 2007 and problably earlier. Worst cards for this noise for me were used in a Dell 720 XPS with a propiertary PSU.

Thnk my 9800 GX2 had it bad and the GTX (8800), both use in the Dell XPS. From memory it was mostly when in the game menu's or when loading. Various other cards had it too but definitely can't remember them

I've read several posts from different people on the forum suggesting that a night benching Heaven (or something similar) in a loop helps break-in some cards and reduce the coil whine so when you're going to bed put Heaven on a loop while benching and see if things have changed tomorrow.

It's probably a myth but it doesn't hurt to try.

how could OCUK charge a small premium then back in 980/980Ti days for a coil-whine free version then ?

True but then why after all these years has progress simply not eradicated the problem? Don't think the ocuk cards were guarenteed to eliminate the problem btw and why not continue selling such cards as must have been done with a board partner? The common gc parts are probably cheap anyway these days, just the chip and memory etc more expensive, so if one part was causing it I'm fairly sure the issue would be eradicated by now.

If OP has had three cards the same then I'd look elsewhere than just the card

Minor miracle this morning, the coil whine has reduced massively. :D

Tried 3dmark and I could not hear anything, I've changed nothing other than overclocking.

It's still there, I can hear it in Left for Dead 2 at 300fps but it's not that bad at all, would never be able to hear over any background noise.

Tbh I get my coil whine when I have a major change to the system. Like a driver change or something. Uninstall and reinstall and it's gone. But every time I get a driver crash it's back so I install again and it's fine again.

could be elsewhere

but remember for consumer electronics 1p part difference here and there can make a massive difference

just look at prices of some of the poorer op-amps and better hifi op-amps - we're talking pence difference - if it didn't add up all manufacturers would use the better ones

Happened to me too. Shut down the PC came back hours later and it had gone. Well theres still a faint noise under certain conditions but barely audible over the sound of the case fans and nothing like the howling banshee it had been before. Strange.

Pretty much every GPU ever made, other than a small number with exotic components, make some coil whine once you go above somewhere between 200 and 300fps.

I must have been lucky but I've been through 100s of GPUs (personal, work, etc.) and never encountered one that makes noticeable whine at <200fps and I do hear it when it is present.

Op amp prices can be really really strange.

On a £600+ graphics card I just doubt they're worried about saving a pence per unit if the result is a number of cards get sent back with poor customer experience.

Could be wrong though :). Would be good if someone put the question to Nvidia and AMD concerning why cards today still sometimes cause an audible whine/squeal especially at high FPS.
