Right, i've just had a phone call from some company called Phones 4 (for) All.
I can't find anything on google about them, but the guy said they're an orrange dealer or something and that because i've had my handset for 12months they can send me an upgrade.
Now, he said their 'confirmation team' will call me in a few hours with what handset they can send me - but i was just wondering if anybody knows anything about this kind of upgrade with it being from some other company rather than orange, because orange phoned me recently saying i'd been contracted for 12 months...
then they realised i'd signed upto a deal with another third party which gave me a 10% discount each month, but this kept me contracted till november...so i'm a little unsure.

dont bother, i hear more bad about these sort of companies than good.

if you want an upgrade, goto your network.

I had a very "brief" exchange with a Manager from one of those companies on Monday after they phoned me for the 3rd time in a month after I'd asked them to remove my name from their database. He really struggled with the concept that someone didn't want to be called by a company they had never heard of, hadn't given their number to and had already told to **** right off twice (politely).

They'll probably call back next week to see if I've changed my mind

ok, a work colleague of mine recently had a second job working for one of these companies.

they work on behalf of the network provider, but arent actually directly connected to the network (like when you go into the network shop). they get a cd/dvd every month with mobile numbers on and this is loaded into their computers. the computer auto dials every number on the list blah de blah...anyways, he told me that as well as registering your landline with TPS, you can also register your mobile number. it takes upto 28 days (depending when the most recent cd of numbers was released. but from there on out your number will never appear on these marketing cd's again.

as for signing up to anything, you would be better off contacting the network operator yourself.

EDIT: they are only selling NEW contracts, they dont really do upgrades. technically, as you would be getting one of the most recent handsets, you would be upgrading your phone, but at the end of the day you would be signing up to a new contract with this company on whatever network. you take the initial call, and if you are interested your number is passed on. the confirmation team call you back to do a credit check, take details and finalise the deal.

I will just point out that they do not work on 'behalf' of the network provider any more than CPW or the Link work on 'behalf' of a network provider. They have nothing whatsoever to do with the network providers.

I will also point out that the CD's do NOT come from the network providers either. They are again obtained independantly from another source. However you can have a very good stab at identifying a mobile network from the number, as (porting excluded) the first five digits specify the network the number belongs to.

These companies like to pretend they are operating with the approval of, and have had information given to them by, the networks, but they haven't. I just wanted to make that crystal clear.

After all, if the networks gave out the information, I wouldn't get them trying to upgrade my company provided handset :)
