Third world problems....

Actually I should have asked for more information. If there is more than one place that water drains from (e.g. two or more 'bowls') then no bowl required. If only one then bowl :p

Good point ....

There is one large bowl and a separate thing, but not big enough for any bowl maybe 2/3 mugs.

I can only imagine to save water when washing up but that means by the end you're doing your dishes in dirty water.

I still don't understand though... Not sure how putting a bowl inside a sink (that is naturally bowl shaped) helps save water (assuming you put the plug in). It's not like anyone forces you to fill the sink right up?

Also, surely a stainless steel sink for example is more hygienic than a plastic washing up bowl?

At work I think using a washing up bowl actually uses more water throughout the day than just rinsing the odd cup or plate under a running tap - as there is enough time between people using the sink, that the bowl of water has gone cold, then gets emptied and re-filled by the next person.

I use a bowl simply because sometimes I need to use the sink for something else (rinsing of salad etc) and it's easier to lift a bowl out rather than two forks, two knives, two cups, two plates etc separately. It also means if something needs soaking, I can lift the bowl out and put it on the side and still use the sink.

I have a dishwasher, but I seem to be the only one in the house capable of loading it, so everyone else puts the dirty stuff in the bowl.

I think it goes back to the old heavy stone and ceramic sinks where they would literally suck the heat out of the water, meaning you needed more hot water to get the same washing water temp if that makes sense.
Still even today adding hot water to a metal sink will use more energy than a plastic bowl in a metal sink, but its debatable if people would care, you just run the hot tap a little longer before filling the sink so its a little hotter than it would have needed to be to fill a bowl.

Seriously though who washes up by hand now a days though ;)

Pro tip - if your sink starts to accumulate stains, add a generous amount of washing powder or a small scope of vanish to a sink full of boiling water. Leave until it cools and all the stains will be gone.
