Total is around £700, although i hope to knock that down a little with this week only offers over the next few weeks

Look fairly compatible?

(All the components i need are listed, the two fans are for front of case)

I personally would go for the HX520 as its modular and the same price. It will help keep the case looking tidy. Whats the PC going to be used for? You might be better off with a new C2D rather than that old quad.

The PC will be used pretty extensively for audio editing and manipulation/creation. Thankfully the software is fully supportive of up to 8-cores! It will also be used for video editing/encoding also quite a bit, so for me it has to be a quad. :D:eek: Unfortunatly, 45nm are too expensive for my liking, especially since i7 has been released and prices havent moved an inch. To cut costs i may be able to get a second hand Q6600 for about 100 quid. The 8gb of RAM isnt vital, but at the price it is, i thought why not? The 4850 is for my gaming needs obviously!

May look into the HX520 also, as i could do with a nice tidy case. Never had one that wasnt messy so it'll be quite some change! I have a modular Hiper 580W at the moment that is more than powerful (on paper anyway) to run the system, but i dont trust it!

Thanks for your input so far. Any other advice/recommendations?

:)

Why are you going with a Q6600?

I would look at the newer 45nm quads but even then your still buying into a socket thats been replaced and has a limited upgrade path.

As you can't stretch to i7 I would look at a Phenom 2.

id go for the Q6600 if i was in your place.

i got 3.6GHz out of mine using the cooler you have selected.

overall a good spec.

How would a Hiper 580W Modular (new model, about 3 months old) hold up with:

q6600 at stock
4850 1gb at stock
2x2gb 1066 kingston
1xsata dvd-rw
1xsata hdd
1xide hdd
1x80mm case fan

Think it will be ok, considering its a new model (think the old Hiper time bomb is over!) for just 3 weeks until i can afford a Corsair? Can afford the components but just not all the extra bits (such as new DVD-RW etc)

I think it will be fine but i just want to check.

yo, just a heads up mate, i notice youve got the dongle running on your system, if it aint legit it wont run in 64 bit os, hence u wont want all that ram. i spent ages trying to get the dongle to work in vista & xp 64 but gave up in the end, way to buggy.

I would definitely consider an AMD setup, the phenom 2 quads are newer and quicker than the Q6600. Also you were saying about getting 8gb of ram, noticed from the screen shot that you've got windows XP, which will only see roughly 3.25gb. So if you want the full use of more than 4gb then you'll need to get vista 64bit. I've put in a 4850 instead of the 4870, since your main needs don't seem to be gaming, so it should do you well enough, it's still a good card and will cope with resolutions up to 1900*1200 in most of the demanding games. I take it you already have a hard drive?

What kind of overclock can i expect from a motherboard in that price range?

790 chipset with DDR2 support is over £150. Just wondering how well these will do? (780)

Your hyper will do for this specs,
don't waste money on new PSU as your is good!
I know many of them blew up, but many people use same hyper for long time!
Used to have one(older than yours) and it was great even with GTX280!

Also, as many people mantioned: I wouldn't pay for Q6600 that amount of money!
But ofcourse if you do Video/phote editing, etc. QUAD CORE is what you need!

Id go with your original post mate, dont think youll get better than that. Dont listen to people that critise the motherboard either as it supports native 1600FSB, so enless you have an extremely amazing q6600 that is capable of way over 3.6Ghz there is no way in hell youre going to be limited by the motherboard! So if you wanted to save a few extra pounds you could consider PC6400 ram as at stock the FSB will only be 333.

^ Just missed your post (just ordered)

Went for the Q6600, Kinston 4gb 1066 memory, 4850 1gb, sunbeam cooler. However, i went for the P5Q-Pro as it is the most recomended board for using Pro Tools (music software) and also it overclocks well. Had these factors not been as important i would have gone for the Abit.

The AMD's are newer, cooler etc but the motherboards dont seem as versitile or as well supported if something goes wrong. Not to mention costly for a similar 775 motherboard in comparison. I dont mind paying this much for a Q6600 as it should overclock very nicely, and will still perform as much as i need it to.

Its gonna be a bit jump from what i'm using at the moment!

Mind if I ask are you using hardware protools or just the soft?
I did not know a mother board made a difference.

At the moment, it's M-Powered, so native processing.

I didnt know that motherboards (chipsets in particular) are so important to Pro Tools until i asked Digidesign over the phone and they told me.
