wont be able to play games or see anything at all - which I presume he does want to do because he's buying a monitor.

Yeah, the graphics card comes afterward, won't be able to afford it then.

Also, reaaally stupid question, but that mobo has a PCI-E slot for later, right?

Oh, and will the PSU in that case be able to handle a Radeon x1800 when I get the money? I'm assuming no...which might change how I buy things...

Yes bud it does, seriously though that mobos intended for like htpcs athough im sure it would serve you well, but when you start gaming and searching for fps its gonna hindder ya, that cpu also is gonna want oc'ing to realistically play todays great games ;)

Todays games? I'm not a massive gamer, a lot of it would be for photoshop work, some encoding (I know intel is better for that, but I can't afford a Conroe system). The most advanced game that I will want to play is probably Rise Of Legends, which runs reasonably at decent settings on my laptops intergrated Radeon 9000! (no aa though :P)

How will the mobo affect performance though? Just out of intrest.

If thats all your using it for then itll be fine, somebidy said something bout games earlier and i just went off on one lol

Onboard gfx prob good enough to do what you want, ive had a couple of its skt939 partners and gfx were quite good fo htpc requirements but no good for games. Dont know rise of legends so cant comment

Course I will upgrade to real PCI-E later, just can't afford that off the bat.

Bump :o

Just noticed that this was a MicroATX board...is that alright with the case, and is it going to harm my performance in any way?

Cheers

M-ATX mobo should be fine. Wont really harm performance, just that they arent the best overclocking boards usually.

Ah good good, don't plan to do any OCing at all really, maybe a tiny bit later on, but nothing significant. I might OC a graphics card a little when I get a decent one for it, seeing as it does have a PCI-E slot :P

Also, will the case be alright with the really high up PCI slots? As I plan to get a TV tuner of sorts later on...

the board has onboard GeForce 6 series graphics, dual VGA outputs and a card that allows HDTV output.

so yeah... i think he'll be able to see just fine ;)

its only high-end motherboards that drop onboard graphics and VGA/DVI outputs.

edit:

it may be worth noting that the x1800 might be held back a little by the AM2 3000 cpu?

woops, me = owned :/

Whilst I don't think it's fair to say it's 'only high end motherboards' that don't have on-board graphics I also didn't notice that the board was M-ATX (would have bothered checking if I saw that it was).

For the price I can't fault you on the selection since you have a 19" Widescreen in their *envious*. However -

1) That case is & PSU is terrible. It will hamper any decent components you put in it to upgrade (like the X1800 you mentioned) due to thermal limitations and Power supply.

2) Seperate Speakers ? I assume the monitor comes with built in jobbies, but I've never heard a monitor give me better sound that a half decent 2.1 system.

3) Floppy drive ? Most people don't bother with this anymore I know, but I think they still have (limited) uses.

Just my 2p worth

e.g. installing SATA drivers, updating BIOS (I prefer to do it through DOS. Boot-up way also requires floppy I think), etc :)

I'd consider this case:
  • Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU (CA-052-AN) £34.95
The rest looks good

I don't particulaly like the look of that Antec case.... is the ASUS really that bad? The PSU I can replace happily when I upgrade, but I do like the look of it...

Is there anything else a little better looking in or around the £50 mark with a good psu?

I also already have speakers, and I think I may well have to budget a floppy drive in there!
