Hi, I run win 7 32 bit.

Desktop computer.

Have a PCI-e ATI Radeon X800 GTO (flashed to X850) graphics card

Got this when this was a good card. So had it for a few years now. But always done the job. Never failed and worked fine.

A friend has just bought a new card and has been kind enough to give me his old one:- which is a PCI-e ATI Radeon HD 4830(rv770) Says over the huge black cover XFX aswell.

Anyhow, I dont really play games nowadays on the pc, just wondered if i would notice any difference on my computer if i dont play games? mainly surf net these days. watch a bit of stuff on you tube etc.

Thanks.

PS: if i do install it, what drivers etc would I need, i remembered some years back, we used to use ati catalyst control panel or something like that ?>

many thanks.

you wont notice a difference if that one was working fine for what you needed

just go to amd support and download the full set of drivers :)

so, (excuse my lack of knowledge on these things)

The more you spend on graphic cards and the better they are is purely just for advancement in quality of games?

Normal surfing, looking at photos etc. Pretty much a basic card will surfice?

Just was curious, as dont play games on the computer anymore, use my ps3 for that.

I may install it tonight, when i find the drivers etc.

also on the back of the 4830, it has what looks like a s-video? and then 2 sockets, both the same, which are different to what my monitor cable has on it, luckily in my box of pc stuff, i have a adapter which allows me to plug my monitor cable into that and then into the graphics card.

Why 2 outputs? is that if you want to have 2 monitors?

and is this new socket, a new standard now?

Yep, 2 outputs is for 2 monitors.

Can't say for certain what monitor connections your card has, but if it has 2 the same then they are most likely DVI connectors. The standard has been around for quite a while now (you can get VGA to DVI connectors - which sounds like what you have).

As for just general 2d work, their won't really be any difference between this card and your old card, however, this card does give you the option of playing some of the newer games on PC if you so wished.

yes just googled DVI images, thats what my new card has x2, my old one was as you say VGA,

Thank you. It is a lot bigger, so, we shall see if it fits, present card has same power connector so that wont be a issue.

Ah, takes me back, I used to have an X800, back when I had a P4 Was awesome when I bought it, like £120 worth of my money, back when I was about 12

As said, the difference if you are only web browsing etc will probably be minimal, however I would change it anyway, as the 4830 will be far more efficient than the X800, and should you decide to play any games, it will make a difference.

As for drivers for it, go here and use the drop down menus to select the right options.

installed (just fits) god its big compared to my old one.

Win 7 picked it up fine. Did download and install the ati drivers, was there any need though ? as win7 found it and it seemed to work fine

Tho unlikely to be an issue a small number of web apps/programs do use newer Shader Model features that the x800 didn't support so always nice to have the support - I believe some media players can also use these kinda features for enhanced playback.

Even with this new Graphics card, my max screen res is 1280x1024, which is what I have been using anyhow.

Is the max res set from the monitor? not the G/Card?

Mind you I have a 19" Samsung Syncmaster. Served me well for some 5 or so years.
