This Forum. Why so basic?

If there is one thing I would like to see changed is the signature restrictions. Just allowing a larger sized one say something like 400x110 would be much better, especially if you want to fill in your full PC specs in it, often it is difficult to cram it all in.

So, 400x110 max size 25kb would be better I feel :)
 
those moaning about custom avatars saying that they will be animated and sparkly and taking up all the space need to get a grip, custom avatars could have strict rules like the sigs.. the same sizee for everyone, no animated, jpg only etc. the forum would still look as clean but then atleast everyone would be unique if they wanted the option.
 
Avatars are useful for one thing - formatting post size.

people without avatars are dead annoying because their posts are tiny.

I think it's because this is a tech forum that the forum is so good. They haven't tweaked or modded the hell out of it, because they understand the technology, and furthermore, they understand what the forum membership want. A quick, clean, easy to read forum, where the content and the community is more important than a fancy script laden forum with security bugs and other issues.

Ultimately, this is one of maybe 2 or 3 forums I browse as a result.

But is it what the people want? There are many requests here for extra features although many others to keep the basic ness. Perhaps a poll asking what people would like to see?

My preference? Keep sigs small, text or jpeg only. Avatars may be changed but again limit file size and maybe allow small gifs.
 
simplicity is bliss. Simple means functional and easy to maintain, I personally dont care what it looks like as long as the darn thing works... which it does... and very well at that!

this is the thing. add more stuff the majority doesn't want/need, and it means more work for the mod team, plus more stuff to potentially break or cause security breaches.
leave it as it is, it works, is secure, and is fairly easy to maintain.

Running such an old VB version is more of a security risk.
 
Are you one of those guys who gets his girl to get some Vajazzle coz he thinks without it then it's boring? XD

As long as it works why add it?

I'm guessing because they recognise that many people want to be able to easily distinguish a users post visually, this of course be done with either avatars or sigs. But why the need for both, it's just another thing that needs to be moderated.

Having one rather than both cuts down on the amount of moderation needed and a nice side effect is that the forum is tidy and now has a well known identity. If I could choose between a custom avatar or a custom sig (within forum limitations) I think sigs are better, more room to do what you want with a sig.

As for tapatalk: as long as they remove the annoying pop up when I'm browsing on my smartphone then why not. Youtube embedding doesn't bother me, it's not really any extra effort but I wouldn't object if it was added. It certainly wouldn't make the forum any worse (well unless spammers who are too lazy to post their latest annoying clip started posting more :p ).
 
then you've got no private message system - By design
no custom avatar choice - By design
no extra smilies - By design
no simple way to embed a youtube video - It is simple, and easy and potentially also by design if it keeps lax/cba posters like yourself away ;)

You can read threads.
You can post in them.

What more do you need?

Too open to abuse especially with 10s of thousands of active members. I like the slightly autocratic nature of the nature. A lot less ambiguity and interpretation.
 
I like the OcUK forums best because its simple. Unlike other forums where you can have custom everything. This forum due to its restrictions and simplicity is actually easily readable. 90% of the thread is posts. rather than peoples signatures.
