This Forum. Why so basic?

I'd like it if they had more up-to-date stuff under the avatar, because at the moment we have: ICQ Number, AIM Screen Name, MSN Messenger Handle, Yahoo! Messenger Handle and Skype name, which are pretty out-dated, not many people use these any more (except skype), some better ones would be: Twitter name, Steam account, Youtube channel etc.

That's pretty much the only change i think is needed although most people have it in their sig if they want to show it.

I agree with ICQ (its not 1996 any more) AIM and Yahoo, but MSN is still the most popular chat client the is and Skype is still gaining popularity. TBH though messaging service user names belong in the signature, that's what its actually for lol.

I wasn't sure on MSN, and of course, Skype is still very popular, but the other 3 could easily be replaced.

If we had some more usable things under the avatar, there would be less need for the signature space, the only reason my Steam community link and others are there, is down to the fact that it's just easier if people want to add me or if I request them to add me, the link is already there for them. If you could fill in the details on your User CP and have a tiny icon under your Avatar like:
11szceo.png
for Steam or
2arr7p.png
for Youtube etc. it would be easier for people to be in-touch with other forum members as the details would be there for everyone.

I use Opera on my San Fran without any major problems.

As for the style of the forum, it's nice, minimalistic and clear. Leave it alone :).

This and youtube quick button are the only things mentioned so far that are worthwhile implementing I think. They aren't a massive diversion from the simplicity and cleanliness of this forum. Neither should they be massive increase in bandwidth.

Why have custom avatars when you have signatures? If anything there I would like another gangster or two but the uniformity of this forum is what makes it stand out. Maybe Noodle from OUATIA or would that be a bit too much De Nero? Jack Nicholson from The Departed. Tom Hanks in Road to Perdition. Alternatively go for a set of British Gangsters. Bricktop from Snatch. Michael Caine in Get Cater, Tom Nicholson in RocknRolla. Gambon in Layer Cake.

I'd never even heard of tapatalk or whatever it is called before reading this thread...

I prefer to disable sigs/avatars on all forums because i want to fit more posts on the screen then having pictures on view but i do hope this forum has a better support for youtube vids.

I don't care about the forum layout. It's the community which is why I enjoy spending time here.

Very well said.

Who wants a forum that looks like the back end of a dying cat, with signatures the size of 3 football stadiums and an animated multi-colour flashing kermit the frog for an avatar?

No thanks.

You want basic, then go and look at the Digital Spy forums. It's a site that advertises itself as the UK's biggest media site and forum, yet you can't even post media. That includes images and video.

The forum is functional and tidy. It works very well and there is no need to change.

Indeed. And it's quick and neat. Don't like all the add Ons a lot of other forums have they just make them messy and complicated. This forum is mainly about it's content which is usually top class.

I don't get the opposition to TapaTalk.

I've never used it myself, and wouldn't, so doesn't that mean it wouldn't impact me at all? Only people using it would actually experience it?

Think the problem is that it constantly tells you that you can install the app with a popup. IOS does a popup when you go to a taptalk enabled forum.

Maybe if there was a way to turn off said popup in the taptalk settings on the forum side maybe it would be a good compromise?

Agreed, those damn pop ups are infuriating. I don't see the problem with browsing the site on a normal mobile browser, but each to their own.

Just done some research and you can stop the app on the forum / server side sending the popup to mobile devices, so those that know about it can use it and those that dont want to be bothered wont.

Perhaps this is something OCuk could look into then?
